Optics Valley Kingdom Plaza Hotel, Wuhan

Made my own reservations via internet for attedance at week-long conference, April 2007. Physical plant was superb, and operations were clean and almost flawless. Location was good for the conference (within walking distance of Conference Center), though pretty far from the older "downtown" part of Wuhan. Breakfast buffet very ample choices of Asian and Western foods, including really good croissants! Staff personally very solicitous at all levels. A few problems: First, while my reservation was accepted, they showed no inclination to take the rate quoted to me as the actual rate. It took three tries at higher levels before my guarantee was actually reflected in my bill. Second, while our conference was partially sponsored officially, a second, much larger, more "important" conference "bumped" some people from their rooms with no notice! The hotel's answer was to upgrade the bumpees to a larger room!! Neat way to inconvenience us as little as possible, and was thoughtful considering likely government pressure to accommodate the new group. Third, forget the free high speed internet promised. The charge is 1 yuan per minute for cable connection.
