trip to Japan2006
By ,
We visited guesthouse Bon in 2006 but still remember it so well and this is all down to Kazuo. It is very simple , modest , clean japanese style guesthouse and price reflects this. But atmosphere which was created by Kazuo ( when we visited he was running his guesthouse alone but we offer congratulation on your wedding) is unique. He was very helpfull, always patient and accomodating different tastes of his guests. He gave us lift to Philosophers Walk with detailed instruction what, where and when and this was the best time we had in Kyoto. Also in all his modesty he doesn't voluntere information about his talents as a accomplished chef ( he cooked in many countries, in many reputable restaurants). We were privileged to sample his cooking by requesting dinner in his guesthouse. We discussed menu and he went in the morning to the market and in the evening we eat most delicius meal. I do not know if he offers this still but do try!!! I miss you greatly Kazuo! we wish you great future and every success in your bussness. I am sending your way new friends... A cheap, clean, private room
By ,
Our stay at Bon Guesthouse was quite pleasant. We wanted a cheap, clean, private room and that's what we got. BONUS: The friendly and helpful owner speaks wonderful English. P.S. - The showers and toilets are in the rear courtyard... great for summer but it might be a bit chilly in the winter.

Best Place We Stayed In Japan
By ,
Kazuo, the owner is possibly the nicest man I have ever met. He and his wife were great to us on our trip and really made Kyoto a special place for us. The Guesthouse had reasonable size rooms, excellent hygene, great amenities such as a full kitchen, a nice communal space, internet that you can use any time of day and a great smoking area. The location we thought would initially be a problem but it is only ten minutes walk from a subway station that goes right to Kyoto station as well as the other main areas and even closer to the many bus routes around the city. Added to that the fact that Kazuo is more than happy to give you a lift if he has the time (which he usually finds) to the station and will pick you up when you arrive. There are a few good restaraunts around the area and if you ask you will be pointed in the direction of the best (try the okonimiyaki round the corner) though many close earlier than in the main city, the shops stay open later and theres plenty of choice of those. Kyoto is a great city to cycle in and thankfully Bon has a choice of street and mountain bikes for hire at only 500 yen. As Im sure you have gathered already the real reason this place is such a gem is the owner, I will really miss him and we were only there 8 days! I cant stress enough that so long as you dont mind staying a little (and it really is a little) away from the real buzz of the city and in a more peaceful area Bon is the perfect place. PS Kazuo doesnt know that Ive written this review, I know it has been ridiculously positive but I really did love this place that much.

It's a fatastic place at a great price
By ,
The owner Kazuo takes care of your every need. If he can't answer whatever question you have, he'll make sure to find the answer. It's very inexpensive which is key, and even food related ammenities like breakfast and dinner (if you would like the owner - who happens to be a chef - to whip something up for you) is cheap. Bon was comfortable, friendly, and at the perfect price.
