Different than America
By A Yahoo! Contributor, 3/17/11
I'm an American with a Bangladeshi husband (and 2 young children) visiting the country for the first time. We spent several weeks in Dhaka and Chittagong, and I had a great impression of the country so far. My experience in Cox's Bazar was different, however.
Going to this hotel, you really can't have any expectations similar to what you find in America. You are expected to tip everyone for everything - Nothing is included in your reservation besides the 4 walls of your room (which is not the greatest thing, we got the "regular" room and the bed has exposed box springs, quite small, No Clock). We paid extra for the sea side view, which is misleading because altho it technically faces the sea, you will not see any of the ocean because there are a bunch of trees in the way. The beach is across the street and feels a little far, and along the way we were swarmed with people, from beggars to those selling jewelry, 4 wheeler rides, horseback rides, rickshaw rides, tomtom rides, and several of each of these competing. They see that you are a foreigner and they flock to you. Once you are at the beach, it is nice, sand is clean, and the weather feels perfect, but you have to pay hourly to sit on the lounge chair w/ umbrella and people will continue to come soliciting the entire time you are there, so the beach does not really feel private.
The general areas of the hotel and restaurants, courtyard, and pool are very clean and nice looking. There is an extra hourly rate for use of the pool, internet (which we signed up for, but they never were able to get it to work for us unfortunately), gym, etc. The continental breakfast was the only *free* thing and it was very good with a selection of both american and bangladeshi foods. The room service and restaurant menus also had a good variety but were expensive and somewhat inconsistent. For example, we ordered room service once, a burger, which the menu listed as coming with fries and cole slaw. We received it, ate, and realized there was no cole slaw so we called them to see if they forgot it. We were told they actually don't have any. I would have expected they would find some sort of substitute or reduce the price, but that was not offered, we were just to accept that. Also no one ever came to clear the plates.
I can't compare to any other hotels in the area but I am told that they also charge extra for things I normally take for granted. Overall I think it is the local people selling things and staring that makes it uncomfortable for foreigners, and this hotel is fine but could definitely use a few improvements.
