After landing to Kennicott/McCarthy via the St. Elias/Wrangell Mountain Air and as I searched for the Kennicott River Lodge, I discovered that the Lodge was a mile west of town. Which was not documented on the hostel website. I believe the hostel/lodge is easier to find driving from Chitina.
Upon my arrival to the lodge, the owner, didn't have any documentation that I had booked a reservation online. I was prepared for such concerns, I brought a copy of my cleared check, that the owner had signed the back of & the date it was cleared as well as a copy of our email coorespondences confirming date/amount for this hostel.
After these two rough first encounters, I really did enjoy my stay. The shared kitchen in the lodge is full of beautiful wood cabinetry. I stayed in a cute, rustic, private cabin that can accommodate up to 8. However, I wasn't able to light the candle or figure out how to turn the heat. Note: bring a warm sleeping bag, this lodge is close to a glacier and glacier run-off river. I was very cold that night with just my fleece blanket.
I would return and stay again, now knowing what to except.
