Unique and charming
By ,
Alexander House was the perfect setting for our 4th of July weekend visit to Maryland’s Eastern Shore. The house is imaginatively and tastefully decorated in its literary theme: Mark Twain reading parlor, and bedrooms dedicated to three of the owners’ favorite authors: Robert Louis Stevenson, Langston Hughes and Jane Austen. [We stayed in Jane Austen’s room, which featured a very comfortable bed, a spacious bathroom and two fine reading chairs.] The breakfasts both days were excellent – tasty, nutritious and well presented. An added (and, frankly, unexpected) bonus was the absence of television. Our 48 hours of “unplugged” living was one of the most relaxing weekends we have spent. We also found no inconvenience in Alexander House’s “no shoes” rule. The house is immaculate and slippers or stocking feet worked just fine. We choose to stay at B&Bs when possible, because we like the experience of a facility with character. We felt richly rewarded in our choice of the Alexander House, and we commend the innkeepers on their fine establishment.

Unique and relaxing place
By ,
We are both booklovers so this was heaven for us, so many literary touches. Appreciated that there are no tvs blaring and met other interesting guests there. Very clean comfortable rooms with lots of little details, great food and friendly innkeepers. The library is filled with fascinating books, could have stayed for weeks just to read some of them. Nice gift shop too, my wife bought a booklovers sleeper shirt, now her favorite. Very reasonable rates for the level of food, service and atmosphere and really conveniently located for our annuual drive to Florida--we'll make this a regular stayover.

We'll be back!

Loved the food, the atmosphere, the shoe-free policy (you can bring indoor shoes or slippers) and the hosts were warm, helpful and hospitable. Lots of whimsy and details for any booklover. They also clean with natural cleansers which we could notice the difference right off (my husband has asthma). Great nature areas nearby and a wonderful river for kayaking.

A very uncomfortable place to stay.
By ,
Upon checking in you will be expected to sign a contract with a long list of rules. The owner will announce that she discards all items left behind in the rooms. She will announce the house is a 'no shoe' building while at the same time will be wearing shoes herself. Generally rude, as though she was doing her guests a service by allowing them to stay in the house. The rooms are fine but contact with the owner is most uncomfortable. Not a place I would go back to considering the other options available in the general area.

Fantastic Room - Food - Hospitality
By ,
We just stayed for 2 nights in the Jane Austen room of the Alexander House. We are so looking forward to our next visit here. Our stay was simply fantastic. Elizabeth is a wonderful hostess and really made us feel welcome. The room was simply beautiful. There were so many little touches that made it very special. The food was fantastic. One morning we had crepes - OUTSTANDING!!! The next morning I had French toast and my husband had an omelet - also OUTSTANDING!!! There was a great selection of teas, coffee, pastry, and fruit always available. In the evening, brandy was provided. Surrounded by a fantastic library, the reading room was so comfortable and relaxing. I want go back in the winter to enjoy the cozy fireplace. The porch is beautiful, comfortable, and very private. We also spent a wonderful evening talking with Elizabeth and her husband, Peter. Everything about this place was truly exceptional. If you want a quiet get-away, this is the place to go! Located in Princess Anne, there is great seafood available nearby. This B & B is very close to Crisfield, MD - the crab center of the Eastern shore.

Literary luxury

Great clean whimsical place; friendly innkeepers. We met for a girls get together (we live in different areas of the East Coast. Had a great time staying up with a pj party in the Jane Austen suite. Excellent food. Loved the crepes. Sat on the lovely front porch and had teas together. Wonderful experience.
