Ellis Sanders House, Nauvoo

The owners were helpful in suggesting things for the surrounding area. The room was nice and cozy. The breakfasts were very elegant. They really tried to make the stay a memorable one and did a great job. We had to leave earlier and were willing to change the breakfast time for us. The history of the house is amazing and the house is very well maintained.

If you want class, comfort, elegance, serenity, beauty a perfect location and wonderful hosts nothing beats Ellis Sanders Bed & Breakfast.I am a past Mayor of the London Borough of Merton and in my travels have vistited many houses offering bed and breakfast none come anywhere near my experience at Ellis Sanders House. If you are looking for something a little special then you have found it.Diane and David are the most gracious kindly folk who will delight you with their very personal care and concern for you. They will give you a warm welcome to their beautiful home. If you want information or advice just ask them. The food is wonderful, the rooms exquisite and all this is just a short way from the beautiful Nauvoo Temple and all the other wonderful historic sites. Every historic site I went to was full of interest and staffed by wonderful people only too willing to explain and spend time with you. I spent some time there, what a holiday. If Diane and David ever retire the house will never be the same. Go now before you miss the opporunity. I highly recommend it all and it is my hope to return again soon in 2009 I hope. This B&B was NOT willing to accommodate our time schedule at all. We went there on the first night of our marriage, the room was clean but very small. We could hear the other newlywed couple down the hall and had to share a restroom area with them! They said that there is a "candlelight dessert" offered in the evening, but since they (the owners) went out to a show--and came back late they decided not to provide the dessert until the next morning apparently. Then we had to leave at 7 a.m. which was apparently too early for them so we basically ended up just paying for a bed. Honestly, I would have much rather stayed at a Holiday Inn in Keokuk (20 min away) as there would have been more privacy and better service for the same price! *Also, the price does not include taxes!! So expect to be charged after you leave for even more money!! Definitely not worth the $179 price!!

I got married in Nauvoo on Feb. 29th, and other locals heard I was staying here for the honeymoon and they all said that is the best place in the city to stay...I had no idea how right they would be! The owners were model examples of how I want my home to be with my family. They were nice, friendly, perfect cooks and hosts, personable, talkative, and hospitable. They serve guests a professional and visually appealing dessert at night. The wife is a gourmet cook and the husband is like a waiter you'd long for at restaurants. I rarely take photos of food I eat, but I took video of the food! I took video of much of our experience, I was that impressed. We aren't picky eaters, so we LOVED the gourmet food. It was the perfect place to place to spend the first few days of marriage. They gave us space, comfort, and a lot of privacy. The other room wasn't occupied, so we had the whole floor to ourselves. They played soft music all the time on the lower level, and played church music on Sunday. They built a fire for us, lit candles all over, and just made it so romantic and amazing! We live 7 hours away, but are trying to plan two trips there in the coming year. Worth every penny, and this is coming from two college students. It was my first bed and breakfast, and there cannot be a better one anywhere.

The Ellis Sanders House is the most incredible experience one can imagine. Everything about the experience is wonderful, but the "journal entry" experiece is the food. The food is the part of the experience that is so memorable. But then there's the visits with the wonderful hosts. It's too difficult to chooose. On the five star rating syste, Ellis Sander House get a six!

If you want the best in Nauvoo, this is the place to stay. We go often because our family was from Nauvoo and we are history buffs. The home is one of only two original pioneer homes where you can stay. The charming owners are year round residents and can help guide you in a way to make your trip special. It is beautifully furnished, quiet, next door to historical Nauvoo and just blocks from the Temple.

I have been to bed and breakfasts all over the country and this was by far my best experience. The rooms are beautifully decorated and extremely comfortable, but the best part was the food. WOW - talk about gourmet!

When you first drive up, you are transported to another time and place. The Beautiful brick house with green shutters invites you to a way of life forgotten. When I met the owners, Diane and David Owen, they made me feel welcome and like family; helped me with all my tour information and enhanced my stay. The room I stayed in, the Lincoln room, was most elegant and romantic. The swiss shower was one of the best spa experiences I have had in a long while. It was just a shower, but it was the best. The food I had was wonderful! I had something called "Nauvoo eggs," or somthing like that. They were the BEST! I learned that the eggs are FARM fresh and Organic. All the food was expertly done, and best of all before you went to bed the sweetest gourmet dessert was served for you. I still wonder how they got such luxuary in farm country. In our day and age we forget to be still, and The Ellis Sanders B&B helps you remember peace and goodwill to all.

We liked everything about this place. It is elegant, comfortable, peaceful and the service was supburb! Hidden in the park, but so close to all the sights. Best breakfast we have ever had, especially for such a little town. The rooms are large and overlook the River. We could walk everywhere, especially down Parley Street to the River's edge. We Recommend this to everyone...
