I first met Mara in 2005 after she answered a question on Virtual Tourist for me. Whilst in Luxor my girl and I went over to Mara House with some stuff for the local kids she mentors. Last year I took my son and we stayed with Mara instead of in a hotel. Staying in a residential area instead of the Tourista end of town is so much better; you get the full feel and welcome of Egypt.
I love the bustle near the river but I also love the contrast of walking along where the people are just as friendly but without the hard sell. By the end of a week you feel like you belong.
This year I'm taking my two daughters too, and a couple of friends. Mara House is beautifully decorated, spotless clean, and so much a home from home you will want to go again. Mara herself is a bit special too.
5 mins in a cab or 10-15 mins on foot from Luxor Temple. Mara House sits on the edge of town so the view from the roof garden with your mint tea in hand as the sun goes down is just incredible. Mara is a mine of information about Egypt and can help you with all kinds of stuff. Check out her site by googling egyptwithmara.
See you there one day maybeinsha Allah. Peace Jim.
