Fun atmosphere some rude staff
By Max, 4/14/09
I stayed in April, for a week and found the hostel perfect for me. It is rough around the edges, but the garden is great for evening drinking and chatting with other guests. The bedroom was okay, but fine, as little time was spent in it! The other guests here (for me) were brilliant and so much fun. A good range of people, from various places, were very sociable. The Irish girls, the Spanish girl (teacher) and the American boy, Mike, I think, were very welcoming and friendly. They made it fun and possible to feel at home straight away. There were two staff members, who I found exceptionally rude and distinctly unfriendly and very unwelcoming (the small English girl, who cooked breakfast and the Canadian, guy with glasses, who I think was called Matt). I’m not sure why two people, who are rude enough to ignore even a hello from guests, should be working in a hostel, with face-to-face contact with folk every day. These two made me feel so unwelcome, that I would not stay here again, if they still worked here. It might sound strong, but it was awful. On a plus note, the free pasta dinners are great and the atmosphere (when the rude staff aren’t around), is brilliant. My advice is employ staff (like the Irish girls), who acknowledge people and don’t think they’re too good to talk to guests.

Hands Downs, The Best Hostel in Chile!!
By Sleeplessinpetaluma, 10/25/06
Hostal de Sammy (named for the owners dog Sammy who died recently) has everything a traveler could need including a great free breakfast that goes way beyond just the standard coffee and toast that I've gotten so used to at other SA hostels. They even have a room with a pool table, table football, and Playstation 2 (and a ping-pong table outside!). The living room has tons of movies to watch and there's a computer room with 5 computers that actually work!! The beds were also much bigger than what I was used to and very comfortable. The only thing that I would have to complain about the hostel is that there's so much to do there, sometimes it's hard to get away and actually see the city (my fault really I guess). The staff (including the owner Charles who actually lives in the hostel) was great and made me really feel at home. At first I thought that the location was a little out of the way but it is very close to the Metro and is a very safe place. Their next-door nieghbors were the Carabineros (the Chilean police) which gave me a great sense of security given that some of the other hostels are in some less than desirable places. I would recommend it to anyone that is going to Santiago.
