Spoiled me for my first 3 days in the country! Ana, the woman that runs the joint is super nice, helpful, and speaks English well.
When I checked in there were a Canadian couple taking off for another destination and a handful of El Salvador guys who had summer jobs in Guate. Really nice guys, funny too, and lively. Even though I was the only chick for the majority of the time it never felt weird. The hostel is huge, brightly decorated, super clean and you have 24 hour access. Ana can arrange for buses, shuttles, etc for your travel. There is also free internet in the hostel, 1 computer but it works well enough, it even has a USB port! Outgoing phone calls are made from SKYPE.
$14 per night when I was there. Although I was in a dorm room, I was alone until Suzanne came and joined me, in my 6 bed dorm. It was the beginning of the rainy/winter season, so there werent as many travelers. Also, Guate in general doesnt get as much tourism as the rest of the country. Shame really, but you can read about that in my other posts.
The hostel is in Zona Viva, zone 10. This is about 30 quetzales taxi ride from zone 1, where the buses leave from. And 8 USD from the airport. Although, they provide free pickup if you stay 3 days.
Zone 10 is a nice transition into Guate. There are plenty of restaurants, shops and places to walk around that are safe during the day, and fairly safe at night. I found it was close enough to the museums, central market, and other areas I wanted to go to. (As always with taxis, get a price BEFORE you get into the car. And its good to have small change, 10s and 5s.)
Oh, and this is REALLY important. Free panqueques (pancakes) and coffee in the morning. Loads of hot water, and I never saw a bug inside the hostel. Andthe bird sounds outside the hostel are just rockin! So nice to wake up to after a long flight.
