A Little Disappointing

I found out about Sybaris totally by accident while surfing the web for a romantic place to spend time with my wife. After looking at the website and checking out some of the user reviews about the place posted on the web, I decided to splurge and treat my wife and I to a well-deserved and pricey getaway. I found a discount code on the web, called Sybaris and made the reservation. The lady I spoke with was very friendly and helpful. The total price for the Paradise Pool Suite, after the discount, taxes, fees and required $30.00 membership fee, came to roughly $265 for an overnight stay at their Indianapolis location. My wife and I drove 3 1/2 hours to Indy and checked in after 6pm. The lady who checked us in wasn't very friendly, but wasn't rude, either. She was just very "matter-of-fact", rattling off directions and information. We then found out that the $30.00 annual membership automatically renews every year, which I didn't like. It would have been nice to know this before we booked the room.
We go to our room. Each room is in it's own separate structure and there are no windows, so you do have a lot of privacy. Many of the reviews I read raved about the cleanliness of the place, which was a major selling point for me. However, the unit we stayed in was hardly immaculate. It was pretty clean, but the carpet needed to be replaced. It showed signs of wear and tear and had a couple dark stains near the bed, which was sort of put me off. The web site says that terry robes are provided for your use during your stay. The robes left in our room were ok, but they weren't very soft and were too small. The fridge in our room didn't get very cold and the beer I put in there was no colder after four hours than it was when I put it in there. The web site also claims that plenty of complimentary coffee and tea is provided, as well as ice in the freezer. What we found in our room was one packet of regular coffee, one packet of de-caf, no tea at all, and a small ziplock bag of ice. Pretty tacky for a $265-a-night room. The pool was nice and warm, the whirlpool was great, the bed was comfortable and had clean sheets. The massage chair was awesome. The picture quality of the TV in our room wasn't great and they didn't have an extensive channel line-up, but did have two channels of adult movies, which some people may or may not like. The steam room didn't get very hot and the shower in the steam room did not work at all. We tried to call the desk about it, but the phone didn't work, either. We found out the next morning that the phone lines in the rooms were being worked on. It would have been nice to know this when we checked in. The regular bathroom shower took several minutes to get hot. There were little signs posted at various places in the room. For example, there was a sign posted by the whirlpool warning not to overfill the tub or you would be responsible for the damage. I can understand the reason for this, but I still thought is was a little tacky for a $265-a-night room.
Overall, my wife and I did enjoy our stay and they gave us a free late checkout on our next stay to make up for the steam room shower issue. It was a nice little private overnight getaway for us and we enjoyed each other's company, but it was not nearly worth the money we paid or the 3 1/2 hour drive we made. Sybaris really needs to spend some money on upkeep. Would I go back? Only if I got a really good deal on a room. I have no problem with a few minor issues in a regular hotel room, but when a company is charging such an exorbitant price, any reasonable person would expect a higher level of quality and service. Mind you, what we experienced wasn't too bad, but it was disappointing considering the money and effort we shelled out to stay there and what we got back in return.
