In a downward spiral
By Brent, 07/15/09
My family and I have traveled to the Umstead since its opening and have enjoyed its five star service and approach to problem solving. However, over the last few times the quality has declined and after our last stay we will never return. We had problems with every aspect of our stay from maid service to spa treatments. Maid service was late and inadequate - they did not even empty the trash cans. Our 75 min massages were 60 min and one of them was terrible in quality with the therapist using only her elbows. We complained to the general manager who responded with a smug indifference. The poor quality continued as our rooms were not cleaned, at dinner our appetizer was forgotten and while eating on the veranda a man was allowed to smoke a cigar next to our table. To top it all of they charged us for stuff from the mini bar that we had no taken. We were shocked. The Umstead has become a 2-3 star hotel with 5 star prices. Stay Away!

Fabulous hotel in North Carolina!!
By A Yahoo! Contributor, 01/31/09
The Umstead Hotel is a beautiful resort hotel with a fabulous spa and is minutes from the airport and Raleigh. From arrival to departure, the staff took excellent care of us, tending to our every need and perfectly anticipating our needs as well. We found the lobby ambassdor, Randi to be a pure delight, explaining the features of the hotel and each morning she greeted us with a wonderful style and enthusiasm. Zusana in Heron's is such an excellent server, tending to our every need perfectly whether for breakfast or lunch. What we were most impressed with the most was the near perfect level of concierge services from one concierge in particular. We travel alot throughout the year to many Four Seasons and Ritz Carlton properties throughout the country, and it quite clear that the Umstead has a gem of a concierge with Andrea, who appears to be the lead concierge on staff. Calling Andrea ahead of arival, was so helpful as she quickly sprung into action and made all of our transportation arrangements and dinner reservations at the best restaurants in town including a special table at a lovely french restaurant to celebrate our anniversary complete with flowers and a beautiful card she sent to the restaurant. (what a nice thing that she did for us) Everything she planned for us was perfect and seamless with directions, tips and her number in case we needed to reach her. Out of the many concierges that we have met at five star properties, Andrea's service is clearly at the top of the list. She clearly knows the area around Raleigh and is a wealth of knowledge for any traveler. On a side note, we did notice that the male concierge at night, Jefferson, is not in tune to assisting guests, seemed to be bothered when we approached him and was short with us on the phone. So looking forward to returning to the wonderful Umstead to for our next get-away.
