We had a wonderful experience. The staff was the best. They were helpful on things to do and sights to see. The motel was nice, clean, and quiet. When we go back to Deadwood, we will definitely stay at The Penny Motel, if there's an available room. Thank you guys for a memorable experience.
We spend our summers working in the black hills, and enjoy spending off time in Deadwood. We enjoyed our stay in this clean, friendly motel. Although the buildi
We are summer workers in the Black Hills, and often spend our free time in Deadwood. This was our first time at the Penny, but not our last. The reasonable prices, clean cute rooms, and friendly staff has made it our choice from now own.
The Penny Motel was a great location - just a few blocks to downtown Deadwood. A pleasant walk so that members in our party could easily return to the room whenever they wanted. The trolley was also availabe, but we didn't use it. Our party had 9 people in 3 rooms, and each was very pleasant and clean, nothing special but comfortable. The office people were friendly and helpful, and the breakfast was pretty good as continental breakfasts go. There is a great porch area for picnics or barbequing, but we had lots of rain so didn't get to enjoy it. The soda machine has drinks for 50 cents!
Take the Deadwood tour in the open air trolley for $8. It's an hour long history lesson, and gets you right to the graves of Wild Bill and Calamity Jane (which is quite a hike if you drive and pay admission to go in). Our driver was very entertaining and knowledgable, answered any questions and gave us some interesting info that was fun to share with others in our group. We also enjoyed the car museum, which also had guitars, costumes and other movie memorabilia.
Teena was a no show and we have a cancellation policy with at least a 48 hour notice. Teena called at 5pm the day they were supposed to check in and cancelled their rooms and got very belligerant. They booked two rooms for two days and we were gracious enough to refund one day for two rooms. They never stayed at our motel so I am not sure how they could accruately write a review. We are sorry they have such a negative perspective. We have a very friendly staff and nice clean rooms. Our Branch House rooms are very spacious. Come stay at the Penny Motel and then give us your opinion. We look forward to seeing you.
The Motel is very quaint and also historic. The new owners took over in May of 2008 and are very pleasant and friendly. The new owner Dee spent time visitng with us about the history of the motel. The main motel was built in 1876 and was actually a grocery store. It was converted into a motel and named after the owners's daughter Penny, who her father went to the hospital and paid for her birth with a wheel barrow of pennies, hence her name. Dee also showed us pictures of the original stucture and the transition into the motel. Very interesting.
The rooms were very clean and comfortable and the staff was great!
They offered a fantastic continential breakfast, We booked the tour with our room and it was an absolute wonderful tour filled with history and great places like Mount Rushmore, Needles Highway and Devils Tower, We even had a wine tasting along the route. The driver was very knowledgeable and made it a fun day.
The trip was unforgettable and we would highly recommend the Penny Motel for travelers.
We rented a kitchenette off the motel office, very nice accomodations for the price. It felt like home. Beds are very comfy, slept like a baby. Nicely decorated, very clean room. Friendly staff and great prices for the area.
They had makeup remover and eye makeup remover wipes. Great...
HBO and wireless internet.
The view is beautiful around the motel and they had a cute little gift shop with
t-shirts, hand made custom knives, jelewry and Sturgis & Deadwood souveniers.
They served a continental breakfast that included english muffins, bagels (philadephis cream cheese & jelly) cinnamon rolls, rugella, bannana & blueberry muffins, toast with jelly. It also included fresh fruit (oranges, apples and bannanas). Coffee and orange juice. Yummy Yummy!
With gas prices the way there are today, this was a great place to stay with excellent prices and was hard to want to leave.
It is a short 2 block walk down Main Street to the gambling, restaurants and fun!
Higly recommended for singles, couple and familes.
Our experience was great! The owner was terrific and his dog was cute! He gave us insight into what to do in Deadwood. He assisted us in room accomadations earlier then check in time because he had a room cleaned and we were tired from the drive. Very home like atmosphere. Great restaurant close by! We plan to visit again and our stay will be at the Penny Motel. Thanks for making our vacation unforgettable.
We will be back!!!!!!!!!!

The bathroom was horrible. The toilet was shoved against the wall. The shower is so tiny that anyone who isn't average size or smaller may not be able to use it. The lighting was so dim, I could barely see to take the shower. The floor flooded because all they have is a flimsy shower curtain. Other people staying there were loud, could hear some man shouting all night. Breakfast was hardly anything, plus the person behind the counter had his small dog there who growled constantly.
