My GF and I stayed at the Chalet for a quick get-away weekend. Mike and Anna were extremely nice and very accomodating. This is a no frills stay. The single rooms have a shared bath/shower, there is coffee in the morning - but no "breakfast". (B&B minus the breakfast). There is wi-fi but they like to keep it off when not in use and at night (after 11). The room was clean as was the bathroom. It is an old building. It is a short block from the boardwalk and we had no issue w/parking. There are indiv AC units in the rooms and a small mini fridge. Also a sink in the room. If you are looking to go down the shore on the cheap for a nite or 2 this is a great option for the $. For a longer stay the apts may be a better choice - own bath and kitchen area.
My family has been staying at the Chalet every year since about 1998ish (probably longer). We come back every year because Mike and Anna are wonderful people who provide a great place to stay, a block from the beach, for a great price. We rent one of their furnished apartments for a week every summer and its, by far, the best place I've stayed in Ocean City. The unit is always spotless and smells fresh, there's AC and cable, a full kitchen, full shower, front and back porches to sit on and even outdoor showers in the back so you don't have to track sand into your unit.
I would suggest that people with kids don't come here, its an old building and the walls are thin and no one wants to listen to screaming kids running amock at 6 AM when they're on vacation. This is probably the only unpleasant thing we've experienced staying here all these years.
Its not the Taj Mahal but its a cool old building that has everything you need for a great vacation down the shore. You get free beach tags from Mike and Anna when you rent one of the apartments, too. Also a free parking spot in the back.
I see an awful lot of people complaining about sharing a bathroom, etc etc.... Well, they tell you when you rent one of their rooms that its a shared bathroom and with 29 rooms to clean and service every day you can't expect them to clean the bathroom in between every use. And if your kids are so out of control they'll kick in a wall or door then maybe you shouldn't be bringing them out in public like this!
Mike and Anna keep this place very clean, I don't know how anyone could complain about the cleanliness. As far as sharing a bathroon, I think you should expect this in a rooming house. If you don't want to share, rent a room with a bathroom, they do have some, or go somewhere else. It is old but definitely CLEAN!!! Can't beat it for the price, esp this close to the beach
My hubby called to reserve a room for the night as we were just passing through town and wanted to go somewhere a little on the inexpensive side and the gentleman told my husband that it was 'too much work for them to get the room ready for us just for one night'. Now come on...we're paying customers just like everyone else. Apparently they don't care if they build a good rapport with new customers...
My cousin and I stayed at the Chalet for years. We always felt like part of Mike and Anna's family when we visited. This is a family run business. The Chalet is what Ocean City is all about, great beach, good friends and wonderful memories.
Been going to Anna and Mikes for years, our kids grew up there. Friends of family...Big old Skippers Type of house with a huge porch and great conversation at night on the porch with a friendly Mike and Anna.
Anna and Mike are very nice. No issues with cleanliness or sharing a bathroom, we've done the apartment downstairs and rooms up...who cares about the shared bathroom, how long are you in there for? Afraid that you can't spread out all your cosmetics????? Great place for bikes under porch. Great place to sit and chat in the am or relax before bed. Showers out back for washing things off and 5 min walk beach! True beach environment. Your at the shore, and this is perfect! If your high maint and expect everything for nothing or like to spend hours on the internet seaching useless information because your overeducated and overthink everything in life...then---be a snob and stay at the Flanders for $350.00+ a night!
Take the experience of the Chalet and cherish it and ask the kids years from now what they remember about Anna and Mike's --the memories and old world charm are there.....Add the closeness to downtown shopping and the uniqueness of the house. We are going this week! Love it!
Stayed at the Chalet last summer with my family. We were stuck and needed a place to stay at the last minute during a holiday weekend. Mike and Anna are very nice and friendly and do try to create a warm atmoshphere, but the place is kind of creepy. If it were just my husband and I, maybe I wouldn't notice the atmoshphere as much. But the shared bathroom situation is not ideal when you have two toddlers by your side and safety was an issue for me since the doors are paper thin and my toddlers could have knocked them in with a slight kick. Parking in the rear was okay, location was ideal. Right around the corner from the beach and plenty of sights and eateries to keep you busy. I would ONLY recommend for college kids or couples on a tight budget. The front porch keeps everyone in contact with eachother, you get to know the owners and the regulars. They try to keep it clean but that only go's so far. This place would benefit from new furniture and remodeling but hey, it has a certain rustic charm to it. Besides that, at night I heard some strange noises that creeped me out but this is a fairly aged property so that is to be expected. Again, the owners are nice, but this is a budget-type accomodation so don't expect a firm mattress, a clean, private bathroom, or a sound sleep. If you like to be adventurous, can sleep like log anywhere and like to save money, ----this is the place for you!
I read all 3 reviews so far and they simply aren't true. The best way to stay at the Chalet is to get one of the 1st floor appartments which means you get 2 bedrooms (4 twin beds altogether), private bath with shower and bath combo, a kitchen, and a living room. I went there since I was about 3 months old and stopped about when I was about 12 or 13. You see our room was broken into and my mother and grandmother's purses were stolen. We were almost on our last day too. Mike and Anna really were like relatives to us. One thing is for sure though, I will never forget The Chalet!
Mike and Anna the innkeepers are so rude! You have to share bathrooms that are not clean and very unsanitary, you couldn't pay be enough to shower in there again! I made my children take showers outside but Big Mike and Anna yelled at my children (8 and 10 years old) saying they had to pay an extra five dollars just to shower outside or they were going to call the police. Rate is overpriced for the worst living situation. Very terrible place, I would not go back there again!
