Stay away from the Amber Lantern
By A Yahoo! Contributor, 8/26/08
We stayed at the Amber Lantern recently. Our reservation was for 2 nights. When you get there they require that you pay up front for your stay and also to sign that you understand that you will not be refunded for any reason BEFORE you see your accomodations. The cottage that we rented looked nothing like any of the accomodations on their web site. The smell of stale cigarettes and mold permeated the room. It was overpowering. The carpet was absolutely filthy and looked as thought it hadn't been replaced in about 30 years. We used an entire can of Lysol in the room. The cob webs hanging from the wall over the bed made for a very romantic evening. The place was digsusting. The bathroom was tiny. We had to go back to the office to ask for toilet paper. The shower was barely big enough to get into. The knobs came right off in our hands. The AC unit was as old as the carpet and had one setting - on. It did little to cool the room. The TV may have been new when the carpet and AC was installed. There was no remote control. It had 9 buttons on the face of the TV unit that you had to push to find a channel.
We spoke to some of the other "guests". They were equally disappointed with the condition and cleanliness of their accomodations. No one was using the pool ... it also needed a good cleaning.
We were not expecting new accomodations, we were expecting our accomodations to be CLEAN. We left the next morning. No one came to the back porch which serves as the office when we tried to check out. Their no refunds for any reason policy must be the direct result of so many people running out of there demanding their money back.
There is a restauraunt next door (TIRED JOHN'S) that is owned and operated by the same folks that run this place. We didn't dare to dine there based on our experience at the Amber Lantern.
We have been coming to Lake George over the past 12 years. There are many good, clean, reasonable places to stay. This is not one of them. Stay away from the Amber Lantern.
