Ensku húsin, Borgarnes

Salmon catching is a popular sport in Iceland. Many of the country's best salmon rivers are in Borgarfjörður. At the end of the nineteenth century and throughout the twentieth, anglers, especially English gentlemen, came from abroad to visit these generous rivers. Special facilities were built to house these visitors on the banks of some of the best rivers. One of them is the Ensku húsin or the Old English Fishing Lodge at river Langá built by Englishmen in 1884. When a new facility was built for the fishermen, the old one was changed into a year-round guesthouse. The building's age and original purpose obviously leave a mark on everything. That, however, makes the place charming. You can almost feel the ghosts of the long-gone fishermen in every corner. Although the house was recently redecorated, care has been taken to honor its history. This is a family-run guesthouse, and guests can choose between various types of services, from sleeping bag accommodation to a fuller lodging, which includes a bathroom, and full-dining services.
