A treat for four out of five senses
I'm writing this review from the beautiful lobby of the Paridisus. Like the rest of the resort, it's absolutely gorgeous. The resort gets a one big star for creating a well designed and stylish atmosphere.
SIGHT: It's a beautiful place. Architecture, landscaping, pool, furnishings, lighting - it's all there.
SOUND: There's music pumped in through the resort. Right now there's an up beat ambient tune.
TOUCH: The water is marvelous: both the pool and ocean are cool and refreshing. After five months in New England and a week here - I don't want to get off the plane when we get home tomorrow.
SMELL: Yes, in the evening you can smell sandlewood incense. I don't know if it's true incense, but it gives the place a ethereal, spiritual quality: ambient music and zen aromas!
TASTE: The most disappointing thing about the resort was the food. Since there is a blend of Europeans, Americans, Canadians, Etc. I'm not sure if the food was meant to appeal to which group. I'm not a picky American diner. I like my steaks tender, my chicken moist and my seafood fresh. The resort has various dining areas with different themes. The quality of the food seems to vary, but I would say it was never impressive and tended to be disappointing.
An example is that they use powdered milk. Americans are accoustomed to fresh milk. (In Europe powdered milk is more common.) Pastries, custards, cream based soups and sauces end up tasting wierd. (Europeans may not notice any difference.) It might be a global, regional thing for a lot of the foods, but you're not going to find the same quality as the Red Lobster or Olive Garden (I eat at the food chains like everyone else - I'm not a food snob).
ACTIVITIES: Tennis Courts, Volleyball, Golf, Sailing... They could use more indoor activities like pool tables, ping-pong, air hockey. If you're a windsurfer - bring your own sail - the place gets decent wind, but you need a 6.5 and mast extension for Bic boards. The wind is stong in the morning (12-15 knots) and calms down to steady 8 knots. You also need booties and gloves. If you're learning to windsurf, the water is choppy and there's no sandbar.
SMALL KIDS: Our group has a 2 yr old, 7 and 9 yr old. The kids' activities are not a strong point. Bring your own toys. They have a room full of Playstations (10 working). They have a schedule of kid's activities but it's almost an afterthought.
SPANISH: Brush up on your Spanish before you get here.
BOOKS and MOVIES: The rooms have a DVD player and you can rent from a limited collection of movies ($5/day and ~20 choices). If you like reading, bring your own books. It would be great if they had a swank little library.
SUMMARY: A hip, stylish place, where the drinks are plentiful, place looks great. The food might be fine, depending on what you're familiar with.
