Great Alternative to Staying in Manhattan
By A Yahoo! Contributor, 12/14/06
I would recommend this place primarily to travelers visiting NY but don't want to spring the $200+/night for a place they pretty much will be using to sleep and shower.
It's primary selling point is location. It's 1.5 short blocks (the 1/20 mi blocks, not 1/6) to an elevated walkway for Queensboro Plaza station. This means convinent access to the N, W, and 7 trains that get you where you need to go in Manhattan or Flushing for that matter. It's a short ride onto the island, probably about 5-10min or 4-5 stops. The 7 is fairly frequent even at night, although double check the schedule. I cannot emphasize how convinent it was!!! I could go into the city, come back to change or take a break and go right back in there.
Outside, the neighborhood looks sketch, but it is fairly harmless. There aren't any shady characters or anything that would trigger concern for personal safety, its just kind of empty. There's Kennedy's Pizza which is open 24 hours and makes for a nice way point from the subway station.
The rooms themselves are fine, but small. Think enough space for the bed and dresser/TV hutch and that's about it. The bathrooms were pretty normal sized though. The rooms were clean and there was daily room service. The hotel seems new, which helps too!
There's 2 workstations downstairs with internet and printing capabilities; good for boarding passes. There's also free WiFi throughtout the building.
The breakfast was alright. Usual hotel continental breakfast (cereal, oatmeal packets, donuts, bagels, fruit, boiled eggs), but it is free and a good way to get the day started! There's also free tea and coffee throughout the day.
The staff was friendly. Make sure to ask them for a subway map! If your coming in from JFK or LGA, with a lot of stuff, I would recommend using the "shuttle" (actually its just a taxi), but if your a light traveller, it might be easy enough to do by subway.
