NOT for families

The Opal Hotel was listed as a two star hotel. This implies that I was not expecting much - and I was disappointed - even scared! The Opal may be a one star hotel - but it's close. Nothing about me screams "victim", but there were several times when I was afraid. Polk street seemed to be the gathering place for the homeless, drug dealers and toothless hookers. One guest walked by our room, GROWLING at his dog! I wasn't sure if he was going to come into our room and attack us or not, but I was preparing for that scenario. Honestly - the cheap cost of the rooms allows some scary folks to rent rooms. There was an overpowering scent (flowery cleaning products?) that forced us to keep the window and door open while we were awake. The noise was enough to keep us both awake at night...sirens and muni bus brakes - even garbage trucks at 3:45 AM contributed to the less than desirable stay. The ground level parking area had a foul stench I associate with old garbage permeating around the Geary Street entrance. The cost of parking - $28.00 - should have been advertised. Four days of parking for twenty eight dollars a night was a surprise cost. Had I known, I would have spent the money on a decent hotel.
On the bright side, the staff was helpful and there's a little hole-in-the-wall Mexican restaurant, the Cilantro, that has FABULOUS food. Once we discovered this place, we did not eat anywhere else the rest of our stay. The food is so close to home made that the same meals do not always come out the same - but it was all delicious. IF you have to stay at The Opal, make sure you try the Cilantro restaurant - it's the redeeming factor. I will never stay at The Opal again - but I will visit The Cilantro at every opportunity.
