Lots of Character
After staying the weekend at Hilly Haven there's lot of truth to all of the posts for pros and cons. First impressions aren't good driving down the gravel road at 5 mph through the middle of cow pastures and relic junked firetrucks, front loaders, dump trucks, semis, campers, and other historical vehicles. We leaned when making the reservation they don't take credit cards which creates a little bit of pain to send in a check. For the weekend we stayed in the middle of August of the 25 weekend camp sites only 5 were taken, reservations wouldn't have been needed. The check in is only open until 7 PM so if you are arriving late you better check what the procedures are. Our site was clean with plenty of space that resembled a state park campsite and a semi-flat gravel pad. Electrical and water looked like new hook ups. As another review pointed out the weekend camp sites are close to the water but there's a million cat tails so the beautiful Lake Ellen can't be seen until making it half way down the dock. There's no swim area on the lake which is a shame. As others have said there's plenty posted rules, which we were OK with since they seemed to make sense. We didn't see the owners yelling at anyone and we had very pleasant conversations with them. There was no wifi available but there were plenty of cameras keeping watch. Walking around the camp grounds we experienced the same as others, nobody around even on a Friday night. A little eerie. When you travel up the hill from the camp store it's very pleasant up in seasonal sites. Sites were well taken care of and with sheds and other structures there's a lot of creative looking camper add-ons. There's lots of campers for sale which is probably more to do with the economy than the camp grounds. The owner mentioned they have even discounted sites to seasonal sites that only use the campgrounds on the weekends down by the river. Showers and bathrooms were clean. Pool was interesting with the cover, water was clean, very warm inside the building until the garage door was opened. At $25 night including electricity and water the unusual package was worth it, but no need to go back soon.
