We will not stay there again.
I wish I had read the reviews on this website BEFORE I stayed at this campground! My brother and I live in different states and decided Cherokee, NC would be a good place to bring our spouses and children and spend a few days together. We each brought our own campers and rented sites not far from each other. My children and my brother’s children love to swim, so we went to the pool right away. Unfortunately, we were not able to play in the pool for very long. A group of three women and two men were sitting at a table beside the pool drinking beer and liquor. Their table was littered with beer cans and they even had liquor bottles sitting on the table. They were obviously drunk, and the profanity was absolutely outrageous. GD and MF were two words that they used continually. I think what bothered me the most was that they completely ignored the fact that there were other people present. They did not respect any of the children that were present including my children, my brother’s children, and the child they had with them. My sister-in-law wanted to complain to the manager, but we decided to wait and see if those people were the exception rather than the rule. During our 4 days at Fort Wilderness, we saw those people on a regular basis, although we did not share the pool area with them again. They were usually leaned on porch rails drinking and shouting profanity, or sitting on picnic tables in empty sites drinking. My husband and I noticed that a lot of the people were permanent residents living in various campers and mobile homes. There was a general ‘trailer park’ feel. Most of the people were walking around covered in tattoos, smoking cigarettes (and throwing the burning cigarette filters on the ground when they were done with them), and cursing. One young man about 18 years old was walking by our campsite and said to his friend, “If you leave that sh—in my car, I’ll beat the mf sh—out of you.” I took my children inside and started paying close attention whenever we were outside. It was definitely not a carefree, safe campground where our children could play outside as we went in and out to prepare a meal, etc. We did not allow them out of our sight for the entire stay. Also, the smell of sewer was overwhelming in several places in the campground. The laundry room is a small room with windows that lack screens and no air conditioning. The playground consisted of one piece of equipment. It was the wooden structure shown on the website, but was in dire need of repair and cleaning. One swing was attached, and the upper deck was littered with food wrappers, bugs, and unidentifiable waste. The bottom of the pool looked dirty, and the water was cloudy. Another guest told me that she had been told that it was a salt water pool. I could not smell chlorine, so I’m assuming the lady was correct. I think that with a lot of people in a public pool, chlorine is the best choice for killing germs and bacteria. The water left me feeling dirty, and it took several washes to clean my hair. We used the pool twice during our stay, and both visits were extremely disappointing. The entire place has a run-down feel to it, and I think it is definitely time for the owners to upgrade the amenities. Also, the owners need to decide if they are operating a mobile home park or a campground. Even if they are running a mobile home park, they need to re-evaluate the type of tenants they are renting to. They do not need to advertise a ‘family oriented campground’ on their website, unless they want to stop the flagrant consumption of alcohol, the outrageous use of profanity, and renting to the type of people that scare the campers and have no respect for others or for themselves.
