SUNDAY BRUNCH AT THE WATER STREET INN
By A Yahoo! Contributor, 5/7/08
My laidback, easy-to-please girlfriends and I decided to enjoy a Sunday Brunch together in Stillwater. We chose to go to the Water Street Inn based on their website which proclaims, "For your breakfast, lunch and dining pleasures, Queen Victoria's Dining Room at the Water Street Inn boasts exquisite American cuisine along with the finest international wines available. Our lavish Sunday Brunch is popular with area visitors and residents alike."
What a huge disappointment! At $16.95 per person the brunch was neither exquisite nor lavish. When we arrived for our noon reservation the buffet had been well picked over and what was left looked like it had been sitting out for some time. The buffet consisted of fruit - slices of cantaloupe, musk melon and grapes, a limited selection of pastries, scrambled eggs, sliced potatoes, Eggs Benedict, bacon and sausage, ravioli, Salisbury steak, poached fish, carrots, rice pilaf, a bowl of lettuce greens, pasta salad, sliced tomatoes in vinaigrette, and a very limited selection of cake slices.
The pastries appeared to be store bought, not freshly baked as would be expected at an Inn. The Eggs Benedict were inedible – a cold, rubbery egg on a muffin so hard we couldn’t cut it with our knives. The potatoes seemed to just be sliced potatoes that had been steamed in a pan – mushy with no seasoning, really awful. The few slices of cake that were there to choose from were dried out on the edges for sitting out so long. The rest of the food was your typical cafeteria style bacon, eggs, etc.
As second-rate as the food was, the service was even worse. Not only was it confusing to find were to go to find a hostess; when we did find assistance we weren’t even made to feel welcome. We had to flag down the server down for any request including trying to get a cup of coffee (which was an additional charge). Empty tables around us sat with dirty dishes on them the entire time we were there. All was a mystery since there were very few diners and plenty of staff. Once we tracked our server down to get our check she disappeared again for at least 15 minutes before we once again flagged her over to pay. She took our check never asking if we needed change. We never saw her again so left without even so much as a “thanks for coming” from anyone.
I could not recommend this place to anyone as there was not even one redeeming thing I can say about it.
