Kiwassa Lake Bed & Breakfast and Cabins, Saranac Lake

Cochran's Cabins is our Adirondack retreat, where rustic, decked cabins in private waterside settings provide the solace of nature we seek. Like the annual return of the loons, we keep coming back. We've been doing it for thirty-one years!

We loved the peace and quiet our cabin offered us on Kiwassa Lake. However, the cabin was a bit too rustic for us. The beds were utterly uncomfortable and actually quite painful, the lighting was insufficient so it was really dark, the kitchen was miniscule and poorly equipped, the mattresses and bathroom smelled of mildew, and you have to clean and mop yourself before checking out. The B & B in the main house, however, looks just gorgeous in a fabulous Adirondacks style. I don't understand why the owners don't fix up the cabins as they have with the B & B -- if they did, the cabins would be just wonderful. As they are, however, we would not recommend them to anyone who wants to sleep well at night or enjoy time inside in the evenings with friends and family. Just not comfortable, well-lit, or cared-for enough. But others seem to enjoy them! If you go, try to get Camp Jenny or Victor or Anne, right on the lake instead of the outlet. We loved renting a canoe and paddling around the lake and down the Saranac River to Lower Saranac Lake. The owners are gracious and friendly. A beautiful, serene location.

This place is fabulous. It's hard enough finding a decent hotel/motel that is clean enough to sleep in. This B&B sparkles. The Cochrans clearly take pride in their beautiful home and are wonderful hosts for a reasonable price. We stayed in the "Moose Room" which is moose themed, very spacious, has a fabulous view of the lake, a new, clean and large private bath, and access to a full service guest kitchen with a refrigerator, stove, microwave, sink, and dishes. The queen bed was comfortable, with nice bedding. The TV and wireless internet access worked flawlessly. Home cooked hot breakfast was served each morning - very delicious recipes and plenty of food. We went fishing on the lake in a row boat we rented (from them) for $25/day and caught a 2 ft pike and several smaller bass. We were also able to pier fish right from their private docks. Kiwassa Lake is very beautiful and much more secluded than Saranac lake - better for smaller boats and for fishing. There are only a few reasons why this review is only receiving 4 stars... 1. The morning coffee was not as hot as it should have been. 2. The water pressure in the shower was low. 3. If you are looking to share some romance/passion with your honey you will not have as much privacy as you want (fear of being heard). 4. When the hosts are out their dog barks a lot. In the scheme of things, all of these flaws are minor and I would definitely go back!

This place is just what I needed ... a place without television or noise. I brought several books to read and relaxed on the dock overlooking a gorgeous mountain lake view. The cabins are quaint and have all the essentials. They are clean and rustic.
