What a bummer

It was Humboldt University Graduation weekend and the hotel pickings were slim. At first, the price was decent, compared to the inflated rates of anything else available that weekend. But the women working the front desk acted like I was an inconvenience that she could barely tolerate.
The big problem was as follows: we travel with a small dog. They accepted the dog (with a $5 deposit, which, although small, seemed made up on the spot), but only in their smoking rooms. To alleviate my concerns, the front desk woman said they aren't that bad.
They are. Smoke infiltrates the very walls. After leaving all windows and the door open, while attempting to at least mask the smell with Fabreeze, we decided maybe a shower would at least help.
The towels were low level gym towels, small, rough and of limited supply. I've stayed in worse motels, but the experience here was pretty bad. Maybe the non-smoking rooms are better (do they have better towels?), but the Motel 6 about 50 yards away is cheaper and cleaner.
