The Bear Paw Lodge was amazing! The cabins were so clean and nice! The owners, Pat and Burt, were extremely nice, they made sure our stay was amazing! The location was a little far out, but waking up to the lovely view of Vallecito Lake was worth it!
My wife and I and some friends recently (first week in August) stayed at the Bear Paw Lodge at Vallecito Lake. We stayed in the Teddy and Smokey cabins. We had a great time. We found the owners Burt and Pat extremely helpful and they went out of their way to make our stay trouble free. We found both cabins immaculately CLEAN and well equiped for all our needs. Well the TV was a little small. The wireless internet system worked perfectly.
Our second visit to this lodge was terrible. The owner misrepresented the rules about pets, placing us in an embarrassing situation. We were rudely accosted by the owner in front of other guests. We offered to leave early and were rudely told we would not get a refund. The cabin (Teddy) was full of spider webs, the shower and toilet were filthy, and the supplies they offered were skimpy. We will never go back.
My wife and I have 2 children ages 10 and 12. We were looking for a relaxing vacation in/near the CO mountains. While searching the internet, I came across Bear Paw Lodge on Vallecito Lake (resevoir). This lodge has several of their own cabins for rent, but they also manage private homes for rent.
We rented the 'Haven Hideaway' for 5 nights. What a great experience it was! We drove to the lodge where we were greated by Pat Armstrong. She took us to 'Haven Hideaway' which is about 3 miles from the lodge, showed us the home and the amenities. This private 2 story home has 4 large bedrooms, each with a queen size bed, and two bathrooms; one up and one down, large kitchen, patio, living room with fireplace and sunroom. It has a nice, fully furnished kitchen which had everything you could want in a modern kitchen except a dishwasher (we knew it did not have one). The home was immaculately clean, including the gas grill.
I nice surprise to my wife, who is an avid reader, are the great quantity of books we found in the home. We did not count them, but there were hundreds of them in the living room, kitchen, sunroom and even the bathroom! The books had a wide variety of content.
This home is about 100 ft from Lake Vallecito and the view is perfect. One night during a full moon, we looked across the lake at the reflection of the moon and large pine trees on the water. I wish I was a good enough photographer to capture that sight.
We rented a pontoon boat at Angler's Wharf, went horseback riding at The Big Corral, rafted the Los Animas in Durango with Mild to Wild and generally had a great vacation. I am not endorsing these businesses, but I want to mention that they gave us value for our money.
This area was affected by the Missionary Ridge fire, but the area close to the lake was saved and is still breath takingly beautiful. We will definitely be here again.
