Have been coming here for years and have always enjoyed great food, fine service and recognition from the managers. They always seem to be improving the building and decor. One of the few restaurants at the beach that has grouper and for years, the best wings in the area. You won't be dissapointed.
I am a local who stopped in a few months ago and had a wonderful burger on the patio and a very good, older waitress. Well consistency is obviously not Laverne's strong suit. They have been located at the beach , in a busy are, for years. So, by now they should be expecting and be able to handle the busy season, it just started becoming tourist season. We came down , past many restaurants, just to get the same burger. Horrible service, management stunk and the burger was not even close to what I remembered, the cheese wasn't even melted. The slow ,lazy waitress didn't even acknowledge our presence for 15 minutes, but kept passing us. After she finally got our drinks and took our order she didn't show her face till the food showed. My husband had to get us more drinks. The manager brought our food out and when I was displeased with the cheese he sent more out after 10 minutes via the waitress, but by then our food was cold, and the tiny bit of cheese that was already on it was never melted in the first place. 50 minutes of my night was wasted on this place and when I told her to get our bill with only the drinks on it , she had to get approval, via the manager, whish took more time. The manager or waitress never apologized and the manager never came back out to the table. POOR customer service. This was the first time EVER that I left without giving a tip. We ended up going to PLANET PIZZA where the service and food , every time, has been great. We are locals and it seems Laverne's has forgotten that the locals are what keeps them going in the off season. Horrible experience. Went June 25th. Look up the manager and the waitress working the dinner side patio, get rid of them, will end up costing Laverne's more in the long run.
Dropped by during the Patriotic Festival. The beach was busy. We were greeted promptly, treated kindly, and the food and drinks were great. Try the mojito. The place was busy and the staff was hard working. Good job by all, it's a good thing to see managers on the floor working and speaking with customers.
We went there on 4/15/09 and the fried flounder on the seafood platter was obviously old--very fishy! They took $4 off the dinner and wouldn't budge on any other actions. They should be ashamed to serve fish in a seafood town that is almost spoiled!!! Also had to wait as the waitress brought the wrong dinner at first.
This place has come a long way in the last few years. Great attitude and true hospitality. We have been treated well on our three visits this month. Great grouper fingers, and crab cakes. The staff takes care of us and managers are working on the floor. They are going through some remodeling as well. Don't forget the view. A great package is offered here.
People are treated with true appreciation here. I would recommend this place to everyone. You won't be sorry.
My friend and I were at Laverne's AFTER the soccer kids, reunions and most everybody else left the beach. That's when we enjoy it.....quiet and yet some fun local spots with friendly waitpersons from the area - and customers from everywhere.
We were waited on by Josh, who was very friendly, very funny and very attentive.
The food was excellent - very little filler in the crab and nicely seasoned - although the veggies (beans and carrots) were a tad on the overdone side. The shrimp were just right.
The combo platters we ordered were served on huge, glass, fish-shaped, HEATED dishes that were bought by the owner many years ago. And I know why. They are perfect for this type of food.
We didn't have time to go back for happy hour, but as we passed the bar, it seemed like everyone was having a great time, so we'll definitely go back for that.
One mini-complaint is that the regular drink prices were a tad high.
Rule of thumb - get your customers to have a drink or two before eating, and you will probably sell more food and surely make for happy diners.
The outside patio has very comfortable chairs - and because the place had so few people there at the time we arrived, my friend and I even played cards before dinner and afterward with a couple of beers. No one minded and this was an extra plus in our book.
We are going back.
I'm from Va beach and know live in North Carolina... I decided to come home for a little get away with some family and friends and was extremly embarassed by the awful treatment we received at the restaurant. Our server Stephanie was absolutely the worst, slowest and jugdemental person I have ever come across in a restaurant!!! I also work in the food service industry and had she been one of my emoployees I would have fired her on the spot! The manager Gary was useless! Not only were we treated as if our money wasn't green but, then talked to as if we were stupid. To addresss a costomer in the manner that Stephanie did was unaccetable. I will not only never enter your restaurant again I will be sure to tell everyone that I can think of via e-mail, phone calls, myspace, and newspaper articles! To those travelers reading these reviews take it from a "visitor" if you are not a local they make sure you know it. Stay away from this "Restaurant" (if you can call them that!)it will leave an awful taste in your mouth!!
The restaurant accomodated a group of 34 whom were in town for a Shriner's Convention in September, 2007.
The accomadations were good, an excellent menu was provided, the food was well prepared and tasty, the portions were generous, the meals were served in more than a timely basis, the waitresses provided outstanding service and the prices were more than reasonable.
What more can you ask for!
Thanks Laverne's !
Our server was from Bulgaria. Her name is Annie. She was totally excellent. The food was wonderful........too much for one person to eat. The bartender made excellent drinks.
Casual, comfortable and a great experience overall. When you go, ask for Annie. She is delightful!
