Featherwinds: not for people like me.
It's a very pretty setting, and lovely buildings, lovely scenery. The decor is basic at its best, and country/dried flowers/Christmas decorations in summer/rustic at its worst. Plastic/waterproof mattress pads made for uncomfortably clammy sleeping, and there were no places to set luggage, no towel bars in the bathrooms, maid service that did not come, leftover wire hangers in the closet (no good hangers), and no bathrobes as promised in the literature.
The food was very plentiful, and usually well prepared. Coffee was not up-to-snuff for Washingtonians. Food service was belligerent & scolding ("You didn't eat all your food") at worst, indifferent at best. A separate "special event liquor permit" is required for parties who wish to have any alcohol at their event. Staff will not serve wine/liquor to guests; guests have to serve themselves. Staff is very strict regarding open beverage containers on their property - alcohol or no.
The level of service and quality of professional hospitality was appallingly poor. It felt as though we were child-age guests in someone's home, having to be on our best behavior, a situation of "it's our house, and you go by our rules." For the amount of money they charged, one would have expected to have the staff fawning over guests, on-hand for their every whim. Instead, we were given a 2-page packet of rules to follow, and there was an additional 1-page set of rules in a FRAME in each sleeping room. Over a 3-night stay, our sheets were not changed, nor were we provided with fresh towels, toilet paper, or toiletries.
I would suggest this place for a family reunion or wedding, if you're a group of Christian teetotaler Republicans (I come from a marvelous family of them). But if you like to sit back and have a beer with your friends during your gathering, don't choose Featherwinds.
