Good and semi-bad sides...
My husband and I stayed at the Taylor Hotel this weekend. As soon as he walked in, to be frank, he was a little upset with me. But at the end of the trip, he was ok with my "thrifty-ness." It was a great price...great location - just a couple blocks from Union Square and the bus/trolley stations. We also took a few cabs down to the wharf and it only cost $7.00 each way. Anyway...the room was very bare, but clean. It looked like the paint was pretty new. The carpet seemed clean, the bathroom was really clean (the linoleum was peeling away from the walls and the tub, though - and the bathroom door didn't close all the way - it was painted open), and the room smelled fine. We left the car in the parking lot behind the hotel and had no problems, it was fine when we left. (It cost $42 for 2 nights...the family who owned it said there was another one close by that was cheaper, but we left it there before we checked in - ask them). The lobby did smell like curry sometimes, as some other people said, but that was only around dinner time. We were on the 2nd floor, so we chose not to use the elevator - there was a sign on it saying that if you left the gate open, you would be charged $25. Plus someone else said it was scary...but I saw other guests using it. The family was really friendly and helpful to us. We brought our laptop, but never used it, so we didn't check to see if the Wi-Fi reached our room. It was a little loud outside, but there are a few restaurants/bars right behind it, and it is downtown, so it was expected. I was awoken to people speeding down the street, and garbage trucks outside.
**The bed was comfortable and clean, but there was no fitted sheet - so the flat sheet on the bottom kept coming down, exposing the mattress (which was clean). The pillows were strange - plastic, but with a cotton pillowcase - so they were noisy when you moved (kind of like a diaper). The room was a little cold at night for my taste, but my husband thought it was perfect. The radiator isn't controlled in the room, and when it's heating up the room, it sputters a little. There were no outlets in the bathroom, so I had to do my hair in the mirror on the desk, plugging my tools into an extension cord that came out from under the dresser - I think it was there for that purpose. There were no other outlets. The TV, microwave, and fridge were all in a row on top of the dresser (I think that's because that's where the only outlet was). It is a charming little hotel...just don't expect it to be like a chain hotel. If it was decorated, and the linoleum was glued down, it would be a lot better. When we go back, I think we'll spend a few extra bucks to have a more comfortable stay, but if you don't care what it looks like, and are going for price, then it would be perfect.
