Description

The St. Clair Hotel was built in 1911 by Henry Pybus, Captain of the Empress of Japan Canadian Pacific Steamships. The hallways depict pictures of passenger liners, giving the hostel a nautical theme. Guests describe our rooms as quaint, cozy and a little bit old-fashioned. We think so too! At the St Clair Hostel our rooms are charming, clean and comfortable. Hostel rooms are available as private double, triple, and quad occupancy, or as 4 bed shared dorms. Bathroom facilities are shared, and your private room is equipped with its own sink. Of course, all towels and bed linens are provided for your convenience during your stay.

This is not a hotel or a hostel! It is a residential rooming house full of destitute and out of work losers! It's a residential flop house and it's dirty and falling apart. The room I had was obviously not cleaned before I moved into it! The sink in the room was actually clogged so bad with human hair that the water would not even drain out. The showers were grimy and always covered in long strands of hair, especially wrapped around the drainage hole. The microwaves obviously are never cleaned and there are dust balls everywhere the size of mice. The people who stay there are mostly people who have fallen on hard times and pay by the month. Out of work or on welfare. There is no kitchen and the place also smells bad. The management and the monthly residences are always intruding on the privacy of paid guests to the point of near harassment!!! The Urban Hideway Guest House next door is much better as is the Granville Hotel on Granville Street for longer term stays. Stay away from this place!

Excellent hostel

I stayed in St. Clair's for one week in June/July 2008. The staff was very friendly, prices are unbeatable, location is awesome. Washrooms and showers were generally clean, however a bit squishy. :) The building itself has quite some character - you'll experience wooden floors, old furniture and old creaking stairs. If you like old British style you're exactly right here. They offer wireless Internet connection and laundry facilities. I really enjoyed my stay there.
