DO NOT STAY HERE
By david h, 9/21/09
Small, dirty, unfriendly staff, & creepy dwellers. My wife & I tried to stay here but as soon as we checked in we wanted to check out. Very disappointing after having high hopes based on reveiws. This hostel defies everything that a hostel is supposed to be about and has bascially become a shelter. Staff arrogant and bossy. Not for adults. Lost teens maybe. Consider this a sign and keep looking. Victoria is a wonderful town and otherwise very open to travelers...just not here.

Fucking Hippies
By A Yahoo! Contributor, 1/9/07
Everyone runs around smoking dope, but try drinking lots of beer and not being a "save the worlder" and you get thrown out with no refund. Not for anyone who's into a serious music scene.

Annapurna Circuit Trek with Broad Adventure
By broadadventure, 9/18/11
I was always willing to go to the Himalayas and explore some of the beauties hidden in the sacred mountains. I chose the Himalayan country Nepal in order to pursue my dream. Broad Adventure really made my dream come true. The way they treated my during my whole journey was really awesome. I just wished to trek around Annapurna and Broad Adventure was there to arrange everything for me. I was provided with a trekking guide who had excellent knowledge about local environment, local customs, traditions, etc. Throughout the trip there was not a single moment when I could take my eyes off the natural beauty. So, I strongly recommend everybody who wish to trek in Nepal to go from Broad Adventure helping you arrange a journey of your lifetime.

Off season rates aren't bad
By A Yahoo! Contributor, 3/16/10
But I would have paid a bit more if it meant bigger rooms. There seems to be no set fee per room, I saw a man get a small windowless room for 325 a month and others paid 350 every 2 weeks for the same size room on a different floor. I guess I believe in equality and thought the room prices would be based on either length of sty or size of room and not based on some scale as to how many rooms were available for daily rentals. I'd rather stay at a major chain like HI and know that everyone pays the same price for the same bed/room. I did like the fact they have a small cafe and offer a limited menu in the evenings. The portion size was great and their prices fair. I thought the beer prices were too high. and the layout of the pub, common eating area and kitchen was too cramped. Its nice they offer woofing to the kids, but I think paying them with vouchers only redeemable for food or booze is a little unfair, they should be able to decide where they spend their hard earned cash. Especially considering they have to clean bathrooms for 100 plus other backpackers.

great hostel, great location, great food
By A Yahoo! Contributor, 3/25/11
this is a wonderful hostel that i would definetely recommend to young, independent minded travellers who are planning to stay in victoria for any length of time. the staff are very friendly, and there is always a good mix of interesting people to socialise with in the common areas and bar. the location is great, and the dorm rooms are fine, basically what you would expect from a hostel. the kitchen can get crowded at meal times, as not all of the hobs work, but the restaurant food is wonderful so you may find yourself cooking less and less. overall a great place to stay, very good value for what it is.

The only place to stay in Victoria
By Steven, 6/5/06
I have found hostels to be very hit and miss around Canada. This place is definatly a hit. Everything you need is in the building including an excellent range of rooms to suite the budget backpacker to the finacially blessed. It provides an good sized kitchen, bar and regular music events to keep any guest entertained whatever age. I have found it difficult to leave Ocean Island and I'm sure you will aswell. The amazing art work covering most of the hostel will stick in your mind long after your travelling is over. Enjoy!

Management Response
By A Yahoo! Contributor, 10/2/09
In regards to the review below this one: Thank you for taking the time to comment about us. I'm very sorry to hear about your stay, and surprised by your comments to the point where I wonder whether this review may be for one of the other smaller hostels in Victoria and accidentally posted for us. We are the largest hostel in Victoria, with about 80 rooms in total, and 10 categories of rooms, right up to hotel style rooms with a private bathroom, queen sized bed, and cable tv. We typically get great reviews for our cleanliness, customer service, and wonderful guests. We are definitely not a shelter, and only allow travelers and students to stay. Our rooms have all been renovated, our café has been renovated, we've recently painted our building and are in the process of putting up beautiful new signs, and are in the midst of a $63,000 upgrade to all of our washrooms. We do ask that travelers that are dissatisfied with something during their stay visit the front desk as soon as possible to let us know, so that we can find a solution to their problem immediately. Regards, Adam Bartosik Manager Ocean Island
