I spent in this hostel about 6 weeks and it is just awesome. After a while, you don't want to leave the hostel anymore.
The staff is very friendly and helpful and they do the best to answer your questions.
After a few days, you almost know everybody of the hostel.
I never stayed at such a hostel before.
There is a very delicious restaurant and it is very cheap as well.
The location is also very good, just a 15 minutes walk far away from the harbour or Beacon Hill Park and other places to see
I definetaly recommend this hostel.
This is the best hostel I have ever been, the people are friendly and they want you to have a graet time in Victoria. The Hostel is clean and well maintained. There are many different rooms in the hostel and are cleaned every day. Every nicht there is a different entertainment, open mic's, quiz nights and more are planned every week.
I had a great time!
In regards to the review below this one:
Thank you for taking the time to comment about us. I'm very sorry to hear about your stay, and surprised by your comments to the point where I wonder whether this review may be for one of the other smaller hostels in Victoria and accidentally posted for us. We are the largest hostel in Victoria, with about 80 rooms in total, and 10 categories of rooms, right up to hotel style rooms with a private bathroom, queen sized bed, and cable tv. We typically get great reviews for our cleanliness, customer service, and wonderful guests. We are definitely not a shelter, and only allow travelers and students to stay. Our rooms have all been renovated, our café has been renovated, we've recently painted our building and are in the process of putting up beautiful new signs, and are in the midst of a $63,000 upgrade to all of our washrooms. We do ask that travelers that are dissatisfied with something during their stay visit the front desk as soon as possible to let us know, so that we can find a solution to their problem immediately.
Small, dirty, unfriendly staff, & creepy dwellers. My wife & I tried to stay here but as soon as we checked in we wanted to check out. Very disappointing after having high hopes based on reveiws. This hostel defies everything that a hostel is supposed to be about and has bascially become a shelter. Staff arrogant and bossy. Not for adults. Lost teens maybe. Consider this a sign and keep looking. Victoria is a wonderful town and otherwise very open to travelers...just not here.
Hey! After moving in victoria about 8 times in 9 weeks, I moved to Ocean Backpackers Inn and I am still staying there!! My room is small but cheap and the shared bathrooms are always clean. I have been staying here for 2 weeks already and never had any problems. The Ocean Island Team is really concerned about their guests and offer plenty of events, which all the guests can join.
A good thing is also that they have a luggage storage , where I can put all my luggage that I don`t need at the moment.
All in all I feel very safe here and can just recomment this hostel to all people out there who also have problems finding an appartment downtown for a short term.
This hostel is just an amazing place to stay. It's decorated with so many colours and love which makes it so much more cozy than some other hostels i stayed in. All the rooms and bathrooms seemed to be very clean. And this was finally a hostel with enough bathrooms, so you never have to wait hours to get a shower:)
The cafe in the hostel gives the hostel also the perfect place to eat and hang out at night. I loved the interesting life music every night and the food too, allthough i am vegetarian there was a lot of stuff for me.
The whole staff is young and friendly, all of them seem to have a lot of travel experience too and seem to know what it means to be a traveler;) and they could answer all my questions, which was a big help in some situations.
So our stay in the hostel which was projected for some days ended up being longer than 2 weeks.
So if you wanna feel comfy on the one hand and have fun on the other hand just check this hostel out... and i promise, you will love it.
I stayed at the Ocean Island Hostel for three weeks and had a really good time there. The colourful hostel has a nice and comfi ambiance and I really liked it to hang out there especially because you meet a lot of people from all over the world.
Every night there is a different local band which plays there and most of the time they are really good.
I worked also at the hostel for a bed and "Ocean Island Dollars" so I had the cance to try almost the whole menue of the restaurant there and I definitley recommend the food there. It is very healthy. You get always vegetables with it and you don't have to wait long for you meal.
Also the staff-team is very nice. I always get along very well with them and they always try to help you if you have problems. There is someone at the front desk 24 hours a day. And in my opinion this is very great because in most of the hostels in which I stayed the front desk was closed at night.
Because I also worked there sometimes (you can do work for stay in that hostel) I know that the Ocean Island is very clean. They clean the toilets every day very carefully. I also liked that you have your own bathroom with toilet and shower and there are enough of those on every floor.
So if you are in Victoria come to the Ocean Island Hostel!:)
The super friendly front desk personel welcomes you and immediatlly you feel the energy in this hostel! The lounge and café area are unlike any other hostel.
The people really diverse so whatever age or mindset this is the place to stay! The place is allways super clean and if you want to help keeping it that way your room is payed for!
When you visit victoria, stay at the Ocean Island!
I loved that this hostel is close to everything- downtown, the harbour, the ocean! Easy to get around on foot if youre a budget traveller, its a good place to make your base. Inside its a comfortable space, bright walls, lots of plants and art around. The fully licenced cafe is enjoyable at night, serving great food and live music/ poetry, also a great place to meet other hostellers. Also the large common kitchen made it easy to cook, with multiple stovetops and lots of dishware.
I was also impressed with the security at this hostel, with a coded gate at the top of the stairs, access to lockers in rooms and hallways, and extra storage downstairs. I stayed in an all female dorm, but they have co-ed as well. The dorms range in size and are all typical bunk-bed style, but clean and affordable! They supply you with sheets and a pillow, and theres laundry facilities for guests too.
The staff are super helpful and friendly with tips about the city, the hostel and anything you need to know! There is someone at the desk 24hrs/day, and theres always coffee available when you need it ($1.25)! They also offer a work-for-stay program, 3.5 hrs of housekeeping pays for a night in a dorm room, which is well worth it! Best deal around, and I dont know why anyone would want to stay anywhere else in Victoria. By far this is the most lively, inviting place around.
