For GH great location & old time charm
This place is tired, but is in a great location - right across the road from the beach & state park, just look both ways before you cross the road! Only a couple food/drink places (one a pricey bar/restaurant the other a seasonal fast food joint) really close by, though if you like to walk, the rest are downtown about 15-20 mins walk. You can also walk to the lighthouse as well which is very close by. State park is right on the beach with few trees. Mostly RV camping in high season, usu. full on weekends. Bring your bikes, GH is a very bike-friendly town as well as friendly town period.
Now if you like those funky old 50's-60's style resorts this place is for you. Foyer has lots of glass, railings, wood & sand. Keep in mind this place is quite old and worn and needs some updates & repairs but the location is great. How it has escaped the wrecking ball is a miracle.
Rooms are variable in quality, some "suites" are better than others, try to get the ones facing the lake/courtyard w/ balconies. Kitchenettes a plus. Staff friendly but kind of flaky & inexperienced.
For GH this is probably one of the better places to stay, even over the chains on 31 because of the atmosphere/location and the price is average for GH hotels. Book in advance. High season traffic can get pretty noisy with cruisers in evening.
Cannot comment about the "Bluewater Downtown" other than it is a strange cubic building with an odd silvery orb window right in a residential area. It is closer to downtown and very close to an OK tavern/"Mexican" restaurant that can get pretty lively on the weekends. Keep in mind GH has painfully few taverns but more than enough churches and gift shops.
