Enjoyed my stay/ no complaints
By A Yahoo! Contributor, 3/20/11
Just returned from a two day fairly local getaway at this hotel. No complaints! Beautiful restoration of a historic hotel/building. Service was prompt, price was excellent for value offered and the food was good (better than many much more expensive chain hotels) Yes, our room was a little smaller than at a newer luxury chain (5th floor) but this was originally built about 90 years ago, so of course the rooms may be a little smaller. Overall a great experience and I would not hesitate to stay there again...in fact I am looking forward to it!

Move on
By hickoryeater, 3/1/11
I was scheduled to stay at this hotel a couple of days after Christmas. The whole east coast was bombarded with a horrible snow storm. Airlines were accomodating customers on non-refundable tickets...thats how bad it was. I contacted the hotel and spoke with Josh. I told him I was stuck and I would be a day late. I asked if he would be able to accomodate me due to the weather. He said no. I arrived a day late and stayed at the Holiday Inn. My warning: Dont anticiapte that this hotel is friendly and accomodating. Stay at the Holiday Inn...I have several times. I was foolish to attempt to stay at the Stonewall...I wont make that mistake again...and I'm encouraging others to do the same.

Great for Weekend getaways
By Paneed, 8/6/08
I just came back from a weekend at the Stonewall Jackson and thoroughly enjoyed it. If I had to describe it I would call it a big city hotel with a small town feel. Sotnewalls accommodations woudl rival any you would find in larger markets and far better than you might find at the econo-boxes just off the highway. The staff was very friendly and accomodating. Rooms were very clean, comfortable and quiet. We decided to see the perfomance of King Lear at the Blackfriar's Playhouse next door, at the last minute, and were really glad we did. If you plan to go, spend the extra $2 for the stage side seats, and if they offer for you to use the "lords/ladies" seats take them. Great experience in watching the show. There are several nice restaurants in Staunton, our favorite was Mrs. Rowes for home cooking and great pies. We loaded up on there take home dishes and pies and brough them home with us. If you are planning a trip to the Shenandoah Valley area, and are thinking of stopping around staunton, do yourself a favor and drive the extra 5 minutes into the city, and don't stay at one of the highway hotels. The charm of the city is apparant right away at the full service experience you get at the Stonewall is much more enjoyable and well worth it. i will admit it was not a flawless expereince but anything negative I woudl have to say would fall unde the nitpicky category. All in all, I was very pleased and impressed with my experience. Best of all they are pet friendly, so if you are travelling with your dog, they would be happy to take you. We are looking forward to coming back in the Fall time.

Perplexed
By A Yahoo! Contributor, 12/26/07
I am perplexed by the two negative reviews; my experience with the Stonewall Jackson Hotel was exemplary. A delicious meal and good bar service in the Sorrel Room, WONDERFUL bed (didn't want to get up), and an excellent breakfast in the 24 Market Restaurant. Service was delightful and staff was friendly and helpful. I purchased the Blackfriar's Package as an anniversary surprise for my wife. We both loved every minute of it. The rooms are a bit small compared to modern motels, but they can't begin to match the charm and warmth of a refurbished 83 year old grand hotel. We'll be back!

Rude Service, Small Room, Great Location
By matthew, 11/2/07
The service was terrible at this hotel. The entire staff was pilfered from the local hay seed college and did'nt know a thing about pleasing customers. Beyond that, the location was excelent and the rooms were nice, but small. I would only recommend this hotel for people attending the Black Friar Play House.

Disappointing for the "Best in Town"
By Woodmeister, 5/27/07
The Stonewall Jackson just doesn't seem to have it all together. Twice the water service was abruptly shut off without any warning. The last time it happened was the morning we were checking out, which meant the toilet was not functioning. Ugh!! Although the hotel bar was alleged to be open one evening, apparently no one showed up to man the bar, and the front desk basically told my wife "too bad" when she wanted a glasss of wine to take to the room. This despite the bar computer being obviously on and ready to charge off a glass of wine. Service? A dead concept apparently. To the plus, the rooms were comfortable, the maid service friendly and attentive. The location in "old town" Staunton is charming and a number of delightful restaurants and shops are nearby. Our relatives in town did NOT recommend the hotel restaurant, so with all the others near, we avoided it except for breakfast. Breakfast was somewhat better than adequate.

Great stay
By George S, 4/28/07
This is my second stay at the Stonewall Jackson. As usual, everything went very well. The service is exceptional. I plan to stay there again in June when I visit Staunton again.
