Great for Weekend getaways
I just came back from a weekend at the Stonewall Jackson and thoroughly enjoyed it. If I had to describe it I would call it a big city hotel with a small town feel. Sotnewalls accommodations woudl rival any you would find in larger markets and far better than you might find at the econo-boxes just off the highway. The staff was very friendly and accomodating. Rooms were very clean, comfortable and quiet.
We decided to see the perfomance of King Lear at the Blackfriar's Playhouse next door, at the last minute, and were really glad we did. If you plan to go, spend the extra $2 for the stage side seats, and if they offer for you to use the "lords/ladies" seats take them. Great experience in watching the show.
There are several nice restaurants in Staunton, our favorite was Mrs. Rowes for home cooking and great pies. We loaded up on there take home dishes and pies and brough them home with us.
If you are planning a trip to the Shenandoah Valley area, and are thinking of stopping around staunton, do yourself a favor and drive the extra 5 minutes into the city, and don't stay at one of the highway hotels. The charm of the city is apparant right away at the full service experience you get at the Stonewall is much more enjoyable and well worth it. i will admit it was not a flawless expereince but anything negative I woudl have to say would fall unde the nitpicky category. All in all, I was very pleased and impressed with my experience. Best of all they are pet friendly, so if you are travelling with your dog, they would be happy to take you.
We are looking forward to coming back in the Fall time.
