Love it!
By A Yahoo! Contributor, 10/12/09
My sister, friend & I went a few months ago and absolutely loved it! I dont think I would stay anywhere else. The service, price & room was great! So I really dont understand some of the other reviews. We did get one on the lux suites so maybe that has something to do with it, most of the time you get what you pay for.

Stay away from this place like the plague
By Kevin, 06/04/09
We came in over Memorial Day weekend with no reservations so were prepared to get gouged, but this was extreme. We came in late - 8PM - and they would not even honor their military discount. The room had not been rented before and was obviously in the initial stages of renovation. The AC had a gap so large anyone could see through it. The lock on the room door was nearly falling off. The curtains were more like individual bed sheets that had gaps so large into the main parking lot that everyone could see into the room - no privacy whatsoever. There were tiles in the bathroom that had large gaps and looked like they had never been caulked. I complained before leaving and was assured I would get a call. I never heard a thing. The reviews that we read about this place were poor and I have to agree one hundred percent. No room in this condition should ever be allowed to rent. I've seen better rooms at discount hotels for 5 times less.

Try someplace else!
By Becky, 03/24/09
The mattress on the bed must have been very old as my husband and I almost needed ropes attached to the sides to keep us from falling into the middle. Talk about romantic--NOT! A small hole existed in the wall next to the air conditioning unit which had been put in and scrap pieces of wood installed around it. All wood and dark in the room but I still haven't mentioned the worst part! Mold everywhere! The smell was awful. We purchased air deodorizers at the Variety Store which helped some but not much! We dreaded the time we had to spend in the room and stayed out as much as possible! We caught the earliest ferry out at 7 a.m. to Swan Quarter on our last day because we had simply had enough! The absolute worst part was after I got back home and broke out in hives due to the mold exposure. This place needs HELP! I will never stay there again. WORST PLACE I HAVE EVER STAYED IN!!!

We love this place!

After reading other reviews I feel Silver Lake hasn't been given the justice it deserves! I've vacationed and honeymooned here and love it. Silver Lake is my first choice because of it's location and rooms. Yes, it is a older motel, but it had some remodeling done recently. The location is wonderful, you have views of the boat yard- beautiful! Silver Lake is also in walking distance to lots of restaurants and shopping. The rooms are equipt with A/C and a small fridge and microwave. Outside the room is a nice deck with chairs to do some people watching. Some rooms also have hammocks on the deck, exclusivly for your room. The service we've had has always been pleasant. Hope you enjoy your stay as much as we have!

What a dump
By A Yahoo! Contributor, 07/29/07
It was an impromptu decision to stay overnight in Ocracoke. For $145, plus tax, they assured my wife it was a nice room. We arrived about 11:00 PM on July 26, 2007. It had been a hot day. The office was closed and our key was left in a box out front. The hotel is very old. The window type air conditioner was unplugged. The room felt like it was 100 degrees. Since it was a top floor unit, it might have been that hot. I was unable to get the air conditioner to cool. The roomns do not have phones and there was no Cingular cell phone signal in the area. No one answered my wife's knocks on the office door. Had it been almost anywhere else, we would have packed up and left. What a miserable night. We slept with the door open all night. The only positive thing about the end was it's location. There was nothing else of redeeming value. Avoid this place and be suspicious of the couple of positive reviews on this website. If you have a chance to see this hotel beofre you book it, my bet is that you won't.

A Wonderful Stay in Ocracoke!
By A Yahoo! Contributor, 07/27/07
After a not so pleasant evening camping in Frisco, we were thrilled to see a vacancy sign at the Silver Lake Motel! It was late morning, however the friendly man at the desk let us check in immediately. He had also very graciously offered me a guided tour of the room before I signed up. The room was very charming, and clean. It was like an oversized room on a boat, with a bathroom. The AC cooled the room very quickly. The location is perfect, in the heart of the island, great people watching from the porch chairs, a view of the harbor, and still very quiet at night. The other guests were very friendly. We very much enjoyed our 2 night stay. We wished we had stayed at the Silver Lake Motel for our whole trip. We plan on a return trip next year to Ocracoke and the Silver Lake Motel.

Feels like the Bates Motel
By shawna, 07/30/06
This was one of the worst hotels we have seen. We called for reservations, and spent $100 for 2 double beds, for just my husband and our small daughter. When you walk in the rooms, everything is woodgrain, (which could have been nice, but wasn't) and the A/C unit was a window unit that was not turned on. One would think that if it were 90+ degrees outside, and the motel was booked, someone could have turned the A/C on before the guests arrived. Anyways, the beds are hard, the bottoms are made out of 2x4s and they stick out so when you walk by them, you stub your toes. The bathroom felt like a sauna, and looked like one too.... there are no phones in the rooms, which was a bad thing since there is hardly any cell phone signals on the islands. Oh and there is no pool, and parking is minimal because of Jolly Roger's across the street. Overall, it is dirty. We also looked at several other rooms, since there was a bunch of our friends staying there. They were all the same. Even the "nicer" rooms were trashy and crowded. There was little walking space in any of the rooms. Oh, we tried to change rooms with a couple who hadn't checked in yet, so we could be joined with friends, the people at the desk said no, and then when we talked to the people in the room that we wanted to trade with, they said they wanted to trade too, but the desk people said that we didn't want to... (We had 2 double beds, they had a queen and a single) The only good thing about the island is Captain Ben's. That place made the whole trip worth the suffering.

Silver Lake Motel
By A Yahoo! Contributor, 07/05/06
It was the only hotel I could get last minute reservations at for the weekend before the 4th of July. On the plus side, the location is convenient; it is right across the street from the harbor. The room we stayed in was roomy and it had a small refrigerator and microwave oven. On the minus side, the air conditioner was noisy and outside the window was a refrigerated trailer for the restaurant across the street. Also, the hot water trended to come and go when in the shower. Overall, not bad for a last minute reservation, but it would not be my first (or second) choice.
