Small compact hostel,in a handy location
By richard6, 12/17/07
I stayed at the Wanderers Inn West for five nights during November. When I first arrived at the hostel, the member of staff behind the desk,in the office, was very helpful and polite. However, the member of staff on duty for the next few days I found to be ignorant and not very helpful at times.(Though he was freindly on the last day, I must of caught him on a bad day to start with!)The dorm that I stayed in was a mixed dorm with a shared shower and toilet room. The bed I stayed in came with clean linning and was comfortable. All rooms including the washing facilities were clean I found, which makes for a better stay. The free breakfast provided in the morning was fantastic.(If you require breakfast,I advise you to get down to the kitchen around half an hour before the food is put out because it gets very crowded down there at breakfast time!) The location is great. Two blocks away from the subway. And two blocks away from Central Park north. Also there is a great little bar on 110st West! During my stay,I experienced no problems in relation to crime or saftey in this part of NYC and I often walked back to the hostel from the subway or a bar at around 22:00-23:00 at night. The Wanderers Inn West is good if you are on a budget and do not mind sharing facilities. I recommended this hostel for somebody who just wants somewhere to sleep, have a shower and grab some breakfast before exploring New York for the day.

Bad location, even worse personell...
By Agi, 11/16/07
I chose this hostel for my one-night stay in NY based on previous reviews. Next time I will rather spend the double of the price for a nicer hotel... This was my first time staying at a hostel, and I didn't expect luxury for the price but at least a friendly personell yes. I wanted to pay the room and key deposit with credit card. Deposit can be paid in cash only. I gave the receptionist a 50 bucks on which he said he doesn't have change. I told him I don't have smaller on which he said it's not his problem. There were some girls sitting in the kitchen but they couldn't help me out, so I went back to that guy and guess what? Suddenly he did have change!! After this I handed him my card for paying the room and he tells me then that he is sorry but the card-reader is not working. I voiced my opinion about how ridicolous this whole financial-issue since my arrival is, on which he said I can go elswehere if I cannot pay in cash for the room. EXCUSE ME????????? You advertise your hostel as "credit cards accepted" and you are upset when someone arrives based on this info and doesn't have enough cash on him/her??? Have you heard of a manual card-reader??? Whatever... Than there is no elevator. So if you plan to stay here, arrive with a small and not too heavy luggage. I reserved a bed in an 8-beded female room. Even though there was noone else staying in that room, the receptionist assigned me a bed on the top of a bunkbed. No comment again... Overall I had the feeling he felt offended by him providing a bad customer service and me daring to complain. I worked in a hotel for two years and in the customer service field for years, and what they did there is just unacceptable! Room was clean, though towel they gave not. Walls are sooo thin that you can here every whisper. Breakfast is good though :) Location is bad and even in daylight I didn't feel too safe walking around.
