A far cry from the photos and descriptions ..
By ,
Let me start with the good: location, breakfast, and the cool colonial building that houses the hotel. Unfortunately, that is a short list. The BAD: the photos are from a time when the hotel's renovation was brand new, circa maybe 2005. Since then, it has bee poorly maintained and many things are broken. (I,e -- the tv, the airconditioning, the jacuzzi). The pool under the mango tree, mentioned by another reviewer, is cool except that it dumps sticks, leaves and dirt into the pool continually. On the night my airconditioning failed, the loft style room was unbearably hot -- I headed out to the sofa in the lobby to find it occupied by a worker or a worker's friend. I slept on a wooden lounge chair by the pool -- no one asked why in the morning, I had to again remind them to repair the AC. They made no offer to discount my price for the night I spent outdoors and since they jacked my quote up by a few dollars, I went ahead and asked for a break. No, Oscar at the desk told me. He was civil, and chatted on messenger and facebook while working on my bill. The staff was friendly, but there were too many of them. In the evenings it was a bit awkward since it seemed like people wandered in and out off the street. They told me that I couldn't find a better price in "El Conde" but, of course, that wasn't true. I found one 15 dollars cheaper a night my first day there ... but I liked the colonial building, so I stayed. I would never go back nor reccommend it. It is not a good deal and once the "encargado" had a grudge against me for lodging my complaint, he wouldn't even bother to say hello. Unprofessional, Disinterested -- the only thing good was the building and the breakfast. There are PLENTY of beautiful colonial buildings to see in Santo Domingo. Stay somewhere else.

I loved it, a wonderful place to stay in Old Town
By ,
this old mansion was totally renovated with great taste and comfort, the rooms are super nice and clean , Sertapedic matresses, fine linens, andalusian tiles bathrooms. Plus it is only one of two hotels(the other is Nicolas de Ovando triple the price) which has a swimming pool under a mango tree. Staff was extremely pleasant , and always security at the door (the owner is a diplomat from belgium, so always safe) Good breakfast, nice restaurant 1 block from the cathedarl and Hard Rock cafe.
