Traveller Beware
By A Yahoo! Contributor, 10/26/07
For our 2+week Greece holiday, all accommodations were booked via the Internet based on information provided on hotel websites and recommendations on this site and Fodor’s (which did not feature this hotel). On 4/17/07, we confirmed our reservation for a Superior room at the Athos Hotel for a four night stay in late September and early October, 2007 with Nina Gotsis, the hotel manager. The Athos’ website and confirmation e-mails stated the following: “The advantages of the Superior rooms are the greater comfort and the private balconies with the enchanting view of the Acropolis.”
Upon check-in, we were disappointed to find that our Superior room had an Acropolis view, but only after going to the far corner of our balcony and looking around the corner. When I brought this issue to Nina’s attention, she said that no other rooms with an Acropolis view were available, but we were free to use the Roof Garden. During the last two nights of our stay, the door to access the Roof Garden was locked at 8 PM because the adjacent room was rented. I requested an adjustment to our room rate from Nina based on two unfulfilled promises, which she refused to consider.
The positive aspects of the Athos are the support staff (Mary and Nicolas) and its location convenient to the Acropolis, the Plaka, and Syntagma Square. If you stay at the Athos, the White Horse taverna, owned by Marco, is great for coffee and breakfast/dinner.
