The New Surprise in Grand Marais!
I set up a reservation for my wife and baby daughter to go to the North Shore last March. We normally stay in either Two Harbors or Tofte. The idea of going into Grand Marais itself wasn't too appealing because it was in town and not on a remote piece of the shoreline. But I heard about the newly remodeled (and quite frankly totally REBUILT) East Bay Suites. We got a good deal on our room in April and off we went.
I was absolutely STUNNED at how good this place was even with the construction still going on. We got a one bedroom suite and it was the roomiest accomodations we ever had on the North Shore. Plenty of room for the little one to run around. Fantastic kitchen with the flat screen TV in the living room (placed high up out of the little one's reach). Large bedroom with the best bed we've ever slept on the Shore. The studio unit next door wasn't in use so the management even let us use that space (it was off-season). And speaking of the staff, they were VERY friendly and accomodating when the fire alarms went off in error one afternoon. They shut those blasted things off within 30 seconds of the time I showed up at the makeshift front desk.
The bedrooms actually face the shoreline, meaning I got to go to sleep every night with the waves and sounds of the big lake right outside. It was fantastic, and something most resorts don't offer on their smaller units. And being in town didn't mean extra noise, in fact it was great to have Grand Marais' shops and restaurants all within walking distance. We had a great time!
It was such a great time we are going back to the East Bay Suites in two weeks, this time to a completely finished resort. We can't wait.
