The Cambridge Bed & Muffin was just great, and I'll certainly try to stay there again. The bedroom was large and comfortable, and the house is set back from the street and the traffic noise is minimal. Putnam Avenue is residential, typically Cambridge. I timed my walk to Central Square - 10 minutes. The kitchen is most welcoming for socializing at any time. There is a small porch in the front of the house (which is actually two houses, attached), surrounded by greenery, and sitting out there with Sarah's cats was a wonderful way to recuperate after a hard slog of tourism and browsing. Sarah can provide maps of the area and public transportation, and is better supplied with tourist aids and guides than most hotels - and she herself is very helpful and friendly. The place is clean - that should go without saying, but it's better to say it anyway. The decoration is fun, and Sarah and her cats are charming - now that I know about the Bed and Muffin, I look forward even more to my next Cambridge visit!
Cambridge Bed and Muffin is a real gem. I researched B&B's in the area and found that they were all out of our price range. Then I found CBM ($75-90/night). The location is very central. You can easily fly into Logan and take the T right to Central station on the Red line. A 10 minute walk later, you walk up to a really unique 3-story Victorian, which owner Sarah Smith has decorated quaintly with an air of quirkiness. This is not an upscale high-brow place, but rather a home you can relax in, make your own breakfast (or microwaved dinners from Whole Foods 1/2 block away), and enjoy the company of her two cats. It is a very quiet location with very comfortable beds and nice smelling pillows and sheets. Sarah Smith, a Cambridge native, is very pleasant and accommodating, having run her B&B for 15 years now. If you do not mind making your own bed, not having a TV for a few days (although she does have wireless internet access), do yourself a favor and book with Cambridge Bed and Muffin. It is not a place easily forgotten.
Located in a friendly neighborhood this B&B is not only a great value but it is a fantastic place to stay. It is located about halfway between Harvard and MIT. We will definitely be going back.
