Clearly the owners of the highland house are more concerned with making money, and keeping their precious venue in pristine condition. My wife and I were made to feel like we could not be comfortable AT ALL, that the slightest little tracking of dirt on the carpet or attempting to bring a drink into any but ONE room of the house brings admonishment. I feel like I need to be cleaning up after ourselves constantly.
This place advertises weddings, and I work in the wedding business. Though I don't have personal experience with them, I would STRONGLY DISCOURAGE using this venue for a wedding. I can only imagine the troubles...
The Highland House is primarily a Bed and Breakfast (and they should stick to that)
If you are looking onto it for your Wedding I would strongly suggest to keep looking. The facility is beautiful but the the staff and coordinator are not prepared to take on your Wedding.
They are disorganized, unprofessional, and really not capable of hosting a large group of guests. The parking was horrible as there was minimal parking available. The service was extremely poor and the facility was not ready upon arrival. Guests were treated rudely and made to clean up after the reception rather than the staff that was hired to do so.
The facility is not set up to allow for ANY of the Wedding party to get dressed comfortably including the Bride & Groom. You better plan on being dresses and ready to go upon arrival.
If you want your needs to be met on YOUR special day and a facility that is capable of handling those needs then all I can say is to not be blinded by it's beauty and suggest you look right past this place!
WE DIDN'T AND WITH MUCH REGRET!!!!!! GOOD LUCK
Poor service in general. Specifically, the hostess was rude and unprofessional towards employees and guests which created an uncomfortable and negative atmosphere. The parking is mostly outside the gate and very unsafe with heavy fastmoving traffic.
I was very impressed with the overall look of the house, very clean and well put together. It made me want to redecorate my house!
We were treated somewhat poorly by some of the staff. It was confusing which doors we could use to get back into the house from the backyard. We found an open door and went in to find it was the area for the food. Rather than kindly pointing us to the doors we should use, we were rudely told to get out of the way. The bride was also told the upstairs would all be available to her and her bridesmaids. One room for the bridesmaids and the other for the bride. On the big day, we were all crammed into the same room to get ready. The room that the bride and groom would later be staying in for the night. We as bridesmaids felt that we were getting in the way of the bride while we tried to get ready.
This is the perfect place for a small wedding, no more than 75 guests, unless you plan to have the wedding outside the entire time. It was a little chilly on the night we were there and most of the guests stayed in the house. It was very crammed and not much sitting space for everyone. The backyard is beautiful though, and I am sure even more extravagant when plants are in bloom.
Before I write this review, let me say that I'm not one for ever nit picking over small things. I never send my food back at resturants for minor things, or get mad at things I can get over quickly. However, this is not the venue I would ever recommend to anyone for a wedding. Instead of making a large block of text that is hard to read I will just list a few of the things that happened during the wedding and following reception at this venue:
- The Bride was not given her own dressing room and was expected to share with all the other girls who needed to get dressed. Not to mention the one room given to the to get ready in was the same room the Bride and Groom were supposed to stay in that night (Talk about ruining the mood.)
- The music was routinely turned down to a level that was unusable during the reception. When asked why, they said there were noise ordinances in place. I later checked the law online and found out that the venue was flat out lying to us about the noise level that was acceptable, and not by a little.
- Employees who were working at the time, and not guests of the wedding were drinking alcohol that was brought by the bride and groom.
-They made the guests clean up afterwards. The groomsman cleaned the basement (Where they got dressed. I won't even describe the drip bucket that was left down there.) And before we obviously stopped her, the BRIDE HERSELF was mopping the floor because she was yelled at by the host.
-The hosts routinely went to the bride and groom to yell at them for what guests did. (IE they didn't want food in the house, the music being too loud, etc, etc.) This is obviously very unprofessional because they only have one wedding night, and any issues no matter how unfounded should go to others, not the bride and groom.
From what I hear, there are plenty of other things that happened and I doubt this will be the only review written for this wedding, so I will end it here.
It is a beautiful house and I'm sure it makes a lovely bed and breakfast. However, if you are planning on using this place for a wedding, please reconsider. The staff is obviously not experienced in that type of business, have too much of an emotional attachment to the venue (Basically freak out if anything if out of their control, and with over a hundred guests, it's hard to control them all.) and all and all will tell you anything you want to hear to get your money and turn around and take it all away once you paid.
I truly hope they can turn around the business, however, if that is what they truly want to do, they need to learn to respect their clients and treat them professionally like a real business would.
