Save yourself the trouble - Don't go there

Don't go to the Sumahan hotel especially if you are planning to go to Istanbul for the first time and you live in the U.S.
First, the location is far, far away from all the must-see's while in Istanbul. The cost and time and time of travel everywhere is just too much. Don't be fooled by the two free daily hotel boat trips. The cost of a trip to the European side can add up to $100 and good luck finding a taxi that will know where the Sumahan is. In our case, the map helped but th e driver had to stop and ask anyway. The hotel's location appeared to be peaceful (on the water) and the water view as in photos is great. What you won't know until you get there is that the hotel is squeezed in between a busy street on one side and a busy / noisy harbor on the other.
And here we come to the second problem, comfort. Rooms have no insulation, and therefore are noisy. Don't expect a good night's sleep, we got none. The airconditioning system did not work properly. The design of this hotel, in reality boutique motel, is not very smart. There is no place to rest both in rooms and in public areas - your options are sitting on the bed, a single chair, or in a crowded cafe. I suppose one could sit in the lobby room.
And now we come to the third issue, service. This is the only place in Istanbul that made me feel unwelcome. Don't expect hotel staff, except for the manager, to speak any English at all. Most staff didn't appear to care. So my advice is - stay in any of the five-star hotels in the Taksim area for the same money, but with far greater comfort.
Nor do I recommend eating in the Kordon restaurant as half of our party became sick after the meal, and the half that skipped the dinner was fine.
I really wish that I never came across their website. I was fooled by the style of the site - and a few good reviews. I hope this one will help some folks to avoid a disappointing visit.
A last note:
The web page has many references to the design and architects of the Sumahan. I say this is one of the worst conversions I have seen - nothing to be proud of. They should have learned to design a space that is useful and comfortable as well as pleasing to the eye.
