Spirit Blames New DOT Rules for Yet Another Fee

Another day, another dollar squeezed from the pockets of Spirit passengers. Yep, you guessed it. Spirit's dropped yet another fee on its flyers.

A mere week after the Department of Transportation (DOT) introduced a series of passenger protection regulations, Spirit's rolled out a fresh fee in reaction to the rules. According to a press release issued by the airline, Spirit customers must now pay a $2 each-way DOTUC (Department of Transportation Unintended Consequences) fee to cover costs associated with the DOT's new regulations. The $2 fee went into effect on Tuesday, January 31.

One of the DOT's recently enacted rules gives flyers the option to change or cancel a reservation within 24 hours of booking; it's this law in particular that's given Spirit cause to charge extra. The airline's reasoning? By reserving seats for customers who have yet to commit, Spirit will lose inventory and, consequently, money—or so it says. Hence it's passing the purported cost on to its passengers.

It's been a week since the DOT's new rules went into effect, so it's doubtful the airline has had the chance to make an accurate assessment of how much the rules have impacted its bottom line. So it seems that Spirit is using rules created to protect flyers as an excuse to charge them more. Oh, the irony.

Spirit President and CEO Ben Baldanza offers no hard data. Instead, he serves up an artfully stretched metaphor: "People love the idea of not having to commit to a reservation, but this regulation, like most, imposes costs on consumers. Wouldn't we all like to eat all we want and not get fat? Regulators like to try to sell the idea of this rule, but have ignored the cost impact to consumers. You simply can't eat all you want without consequences."

But can you charge customers all you want without consequences? The airline that gets its bread and butter by force-feeding fee after fee to overtaxed passengers probably shouldn't speak about the virtues of restraint.

Readers, has Spirit gone too far yet again?

If I can't get where I have to go by using Southwest, I don't go or I might drive. Tired of being nickeled and dimed to death by these airlines.

I feel exactly the same way. I learned the hard way during the holidays and in my effort to save perceived monies by flying USAirways, I had a horrible experience and ended up paying an extra $200 by flying with this crummy airline. I will never fly them again and will only fly Southwest. They rock in customer service and it's worth it.

Southwest is proof that it can be done right!

For the business traveler Southwes is no-good. The cattle call boarding process stinks! This airline is for the casual traveler. I expect benefits from the airlines as I travel 30 or more weeks a year.

Here come another Bankrupt Airline, good by Spirit. Fly Southwest.

I used to love Spirit. Better fees, etc. I used them 2 weeks ago, Fee was good, then I had to pay for a seat, pay to carry on my overhead bag, and if you need water, you had better of brought it on, because they charge for that to. Then the planes are old, the sits are narrow, and the rows are really close. I am short, my knees almost touch the seat in front of me. I will never go on Spirit again.

The planes are old because they bought them from the airline company that had one crash in the everglades.

After all that chit you go through with spirit you will realize that you saved exactly $12.00

Is your life worth $12.00? Is a little bit of comfort worth $12.00?

I used to fly Spirit 3 times a year to visit my parents in FL, then I switched to other airlines

After Spirit is done with the nickle dime song and dance you are at the same prices as the other airlines

Vicki - couldn't agree more with your comments - Spirit is no bargain and the customer service is dismal.
    • gforce  •  3 months ago
This airline nickle and dimes you for EVERY single thing...want water? pay up. anything to drink? pay up. Soon they'll charge you for saying hello.

BOA backed off its debit card use fee when there was a mass exodus of customers. Ya think a boycott of Spirit might put them in a better spirit?

Call it what it really is, intentional ripping off of customers.
    • Will  •  Traverse City, Michigan  •  3 months ago
Really? Are you that low on money? How about you fire the person in charge of this new fee, because your losing business with people that actually do their research.

I have never felt airlines like spirit are safe they cut too many corners. They scream safety but all they want is your money. A wing and a prayer!
      • mr wallace 3 months ago
And their plane are old outdated junkers. Southwest never buys any new plane. The ang age of their fleet is 27 years old. I bet Sprit is the very same way.
      • alexc 3 months ago
They are not unsafe because of the age of there fleet, but they are unsafe for many reasons. Again they have gone to far for me. I would never fly with Spirit regardless of the price, and with all they're charges they aren't any longer cheap. I flew Spirit once, it was the first and last time.

Expensive airlines are just as bad. United has been caught flying planes with duck tape holding parts to the wings.

Instead of calling Unintended consequence fee, they should call it 'Mean Spirit Fee'

I flew with Spirit ONCE, they charged me an extra $150 for baggage, or so they claimed; while flying abroad, their reps were not only rude but their english was limited; these guys/company are at least in my eyes the biggest crooks EVER!! then if you want to buy something to eat or drink it has to be cash only, no cards, really??? #$%$????? bottom line, I learned my lesson once and will never go back to them. Crooks will always be crooks!!!! Is it time to teach this company a lesson like we did with Netflix????

      Bye, bye Spirit Airlines!!!
    • Mike Hunt  •  Austin, Texas  •  3 months ago
This airline has been the leader of all the recent "extra fee" charges. Once they do it and the other airlines see they are getting away with it, they all start doing it. My question is why are people still using this airline?
    • sayhello  •  Boca Raton, Florida  •  3 months ago
After all the fees it never ends up being any cheaper to take Spirit. The rows are ridiculously narrow and you cannot take a carry on with you without paying for it. I'm sure there are suckers who still buy tickets with spirit because they look like the cheapest when you buy the airfare, but once you've actually flown with them and figure out how many added on fees you're going to get, you'll do like everyone is saying and take Jet Blue or Southwest instead. I will NEVER fly with Spirit again.

If they helped keep Wall Street out of the oil futures market that woulf help alot.
    • Devon  •  Kingstree, South Carolina  •  3 months ago
Yes people will still fly Spirit regardless of this. Why? Because they are still a bargain!! Still one of the cheapest things going. If they are over all cheaper than others...is that going to far?
    • Brad M  •  La Crosse, Wisconsin  •  3 months ago
I've never even HEARD of this airline, but it sounds like they won't be around long anyway with this kind of idiocy....
    • Moe  •  Mt Dora, Florida  •  3 months ago
Agree and pay, or you'll be considered an unruly passenger and you know what follows after that......
    • gforce  •  3 months ago
What a bunch of #$%$..Delta has offered that option at no cost for some years...giving passangers the option to cancel a tikect within 24hrs after purchasing it.
