While the Showtime series "Shameless" was on hiatus (returning January 13), Five Miles Up With… took the opportunity to catch up with series regular Zach McGowan. What we learned? Though he plays Jody Silverman, a recovering sex addict who likes cooking in the nude, McGowan’s own childhood packing list reveals the actor’s got any destination, his hair and his bod, covered.
What’s something you never fail to pack in your suitcase?
These days with my hair, I can never forget my comb or I’ll have dreadlocks.
Carry-on or check-in?
Always a carry-on. My mom was a flight attendant, so I learned that skill early.
Memorable travel stories?
Because my mom is a flight attendant, we grew up flying stand-by. As a family of five, and being on the same school vacation schedule as everyone else, finding a flight we could all get on was problematic. My parents had us pack warm-weather and cold-weather clothes in one carry-on. We’d have bathing suits, sandals, shorts, snow pants, long johns, sweater and ski jacket … Sometimes we’d end up skiing, or maybe on a beach. We wouldn’t really know where we’d end up. That was really awesome. It was travel roulette. We never knew where we were going, we were just going somewhere. It was a cool way to grow up.
Window or aisle?
Always a window. I like to look out and see what’s going on in the world and what place we’re flying over and whatnot.
What's the silliest souvenir you ever came back with?
I went to Indonesia and fell in love with spearfishing, so came back with a spear gun. That was the first time I had to check my bag, and my luggage got to sent to Africa with the spear gun in it. They found it a month later. So my bag and my spear gun have been to Africa, but I haven’t.
Ever try a food that you wished you hadn't?
In Indonesia, this guy got me to try raw jackfruit. It tasted like rotten seafood. The same guy convinced me to eat it cooked in a curry. Horrible. In the guy’s refrigerator was the even more potent cousin of the jackfruit – the durian. Its odor was so strong it permeated the water stored beside it, so I got stuck drinking the durian-flavored water.
Favorite hotel, resort or yurt you've ever stayed in?
Five years ago, I visited Dreamland Beach on Bali. I stayed in a small, bohemian hut that a surfer built out of driftwood that had no phone or electricity. It was great. You’d sleep in a hammock with waves coming under you.
Three songs on your travel playlist?
The Red Hot Chile Peppers is great traveling music. I’m also a big fan of Arcade Fire and Coldplay. Throw in a little Biggie to keep me awake and moving so I don’t fall asleep and get jet lag.
You only get one more trip in your lifetime. Where will it be?
The Galapagos Islands.
