Five Miles Up with ... Andy Roddick

(Photo: Kris Luck)Supersonic speed. Nope, that’s not the description of a jet airplane. It’s the superlative regularly attributed to Andy Roddick’s serves on the tennis court (hello, 155 mph!). High speed also describes the pro athlete’s life. Always on the road  – he's at  the US Open this  week, hosting a sports radio show and devoting his efforts to charities like the Andy Roddick Foundation – the Texas resident seldom has time for a vacation. Where might you find him kicking back with his wife, actress Brooklyn Decker? Word has it, boating on Lake Austin with their bulldog, Billie Jean.

What’s something you never fail to pack in your suitcase?
Sweats and bum-around shorts.
 
Carry-on or check-in?
Check in everything except a backpack.
 
Window or aisle?
Window.
 
Do you bring food with you on plane?
I don’t bring food on ... I always try to grab something in the terminal. I don't like getting on a plane hungry.
 
What’s your idea of the perfect vacation?
We don't like vacations where you have to lay around. We are definitely always looking for activities.
 
Tell us about a vacation you’ve taken that’s come close.
Hawaii is amazing ... Golf, hiking and great weather.
 
Where’s your favorite destination for practicing/enjoying your sport?
Melbourne is always fun.
 
What's the silliest souvenir you ever came back with?
Only souvenirs I ever get are coffee mugs. Figured it might as well be something I use every morning.
 
Ever try a food that you wished you hadn't?
Anything with a really strong, over-the-top fishy taste is instantly regrettable.

I watch more iTunes shows on the road.... "The Office," "How I Met Your Mother," "Modern Family," "Entourage."
 
What's the biggest regret you've ever had while on vacation.
I don't take many vacations so don’t have that many vacation-related regrets.
 
You only get one more trip in your lifetime. Where will it be?
I refuse to agree to those terms!
