You survived the post-holiday blues, but we’ll bet a pick-me-up is still in order. These sunny island escapes should do the trick. (Read about the world's most secret islands here.)

Soggy Dollar Bar
Jost Van Dyke, British Virgin Islands

It was once accessible only by water (there's now a rough road, though most visitors still arrive by boat), so thirsty sailors would brave the waters to make it ashore, and pay with wet, disintegrating bills.

Cambodia

Opening in February, Song Saa, Cambodia’s first private island resort, is sustainable (built from local, natural materials), with a wellness bent and overwhelming opulence (the spa commands its own island).

Kadavu, Fiji

Kadavu, the smallest and least developed of Fiji’s “big” islands, is best known for scuba diving and bird watching. But if you’ve got to have your beach fading out of sight in both directions, this miles-long sandy stretch on the north side of the island is for you.

Taha'a Island, French Polynesia

If it weren’t for the fact that the water, over a bottom of hard white sand, is only about waist deep, you’d feel as if you were at sea in the bungalows at this away-from-the-tourists (but with Bora Bora still visible on the horizon) resort.

Puerto Rico

When galloping gourmet Anthony Bourdain ate at this Playa Jobos spot, he declared, "Food tastes better when you're not wearing shoes." It's a common reaction to the Sonia Rican, which features a smattering of tables, a salsa-pumping jukebox, and a view of locals shredding the waves.

St. Lucia

A 70-acre plantation that has been lovingly refurbished by a stylish and statuesque Austrian and her two daughters, Balenbouche has four cottages for those who want to experience the island in its natural but cultivated state.

They totally skipped Central America where you can fly down for a couple hundred and rent a house for a month on the beach for a couple hundred more. Then again, that's a great vacation for the middle class and they don't seem to write for us.

Right smack dab in the center of Polynesia is the only American Territory south of the equator, American Samoa. Some parts of it were ravaged during the time of expansion, having been used as a coaling station in the 19th century and such( I think...it was around then). But is it not all tainted. American Samoa is made up of several islands, some of which are very secluded. There are also Marine Reserves and a National Park. Not sure why it never shows up on these lists, maybe to keep tourists out, but that doesn't make sense. We get many tourists from Europe, but very few from the United States. I myself grew up on the island of Tutuila, the main island in American Samoa. My home was built 100 yards in front of a waterfall, and the beach was 2 miles away. American Samoa see's temperatures of 80 degrees, to 90s all year long, with 2 seasons, the wet season, and the dry season. I'm boasting. I miss home. Its true what they say, you really don't know what you have, until you are away for so long.

Don't overlook San Diego!!! You just cannot miss the McDonalds on J street. The one in Tijuana is great, too. I was there recently and gun shots from automatics were raging around the block. The pharmacist with whom I was transacting a deal said "not to worry, they're only going at each other. Everybody wants that street corner." I swear it really happened. Ah, the sweet mystery of life. Face lift? No, but dental is pretty good and much less expensive than north of the border. Also, don't drink the water.

    Culebra, Puerto Rico.

$350 round trip, from US. Cab on landing, $80. Ferry ride to island, $2. Hotels, $80 a night or camp for around $10 a night. Too many beaches to name. Walk in snorkeling rated as Top Ten in the world. My wife and I have done this trip twice, each time under $1200 for 7-10 days, including her chartering a scuba dive.

If there is one place out of this list that you must see, I'd say St. Lucia. St. Lucia is an island that is still partially undeveloped, so the natural beauty still exists. I went back in August 2011 and it was the best island destination I've ever made! Some tourists here and there, but the locals are SO helpful and always willing to strike a conversation with you. The St. Lucian men also love to give women compliments, so don't be put off by it
