The first moment the public saw Mickey Mouse in Steamboat Willie, he was sailing happily on water. Later, in his most lauded performance, a little too much water challenged him—from all those brooms in Fantasia. And on your Disneyland Resort vacation, water transports you, makes you laugh, pampers you and simply adds shimmering beauty around most every corner.
Walt Disney and his Imagineers discovered water is a great way to take Guests through whatever they could dream up for them. When it opened in 1964 at the New York World's Fair, "it's a small world" took Guests along "the happiest cruise that ever sailed." Its success led to developing Pirates of the Caribbean as a boat ride, through the escapades of those rascally scalawags—who are now joined by Captain Jack Sparrow—on the classic Disneyland Park attraction.
Of course, water is part of the fun throughout Disneyland Park. Take an ol' log past the homes of Brer Rabbit and friends up Chickapin Hill—then scream down as you plunge into the Laughin' Place at Splash Mountain. Fun and surprises abound on the Rivers of America: Pirate's Lair on Tom Sawyer Island, Sailing Ship Columbia, Davy Crockett Explorer Canoes and Mark Twain Riverboat—plus on special nights, the rivers are the setting for the magnificent extravaganza, Fantasmic!, in which Sorcerer Mickey tangles with dastardly villains.
Great water marvels are almost everywhere
You encounter watery adventures as you sail on the mysterious, mirthful Jungle Cruise—though, depending on his or her jokes, you might decide it's your Skipper who is "all wet"! A magical fountain summons the birdmobile in Walt Disney's Enchanted Tiki Room. The "rain, rain, rain comes down, down, down" at The Many Adventures of Winnie the Pooh.
Waves of wonder even spill into Star Tours—The Adventures Continue, now in 3-D, with more than 50 different ways to help "the Force" save the galaxy—including one of the favorite scenes in the watery world of Naboo. One of the most delightful experiences, in or out of the water, is the Finding Nemo Submarine Voyage, inspired by Disney˙Pixar's Finding Nemo, which takes you into our little pal's world with Dory, Marlin, Crush and the gang. You can even "wave" to Ariel and her oceanic friends in the Mickey's Soundsational Parade on Main Street, U.S.A.!
Disney California Adventure Park may have taken the imaginative use of water to another level of excitement. One of the best examples is The Little Mermaid~Ariel's Undersea Adventure, an enchanting Audio-Animatronics experience that takes you through magic, mirth and music. Speaking of undersea friends, you might find yourself chatting with the dude of the deep himself at Turtle Talk with Crush, inspired by Disney˙Pixar's Finding Nemo.
And just as an FYI, watch out for silly little sprays to make you laugh—from fun-maker Fozzie Bear—at Muppet★Vision 3D, and when you score some points as you ride through Toy Story Mania!
How about some fun along the waterfront?
Paradise Pier offers all of its fun along a sparkling Paradise Bay, from all—time favorites like the California Screamin' roller coaster to whimsical additions like Silly Symphony Swings!—a salute to the classic Mickey Mouse cartoon, The Band Concert—and Goofy's Sky School, where you'll take a rollicking ride as your "flight exam!"
The most lavish use of liquid magic: World of Color
One of the most magnificent myriad of water marvels in all of Disneyland® Resort also appears on select nights along Paradise Bay. It's World of Color, a never-to-be-forgotten nighttime water spectacular created in tribute to great Disney music, all coming to life in awe-inspiring mist screens, lights and incredible special effects.
Now that Disneyland Hotel has undergone such a magnificent, magical transformation, you'll want to book a stay soon. That way, you can experience the fantastic new pool area saluting the early years of Disneyland Park, with two water slides at the Monorail Pool, the E- or D-Ticket pools and the hot, soothing Mickey or Minnie Spas! Or, if you like to swim in water high in the air, there's nothing quite like the rooftop pool at Disney's Paradise Pier Hotel.
A spa treatment is one of the most heavenly uses of water, and The Mandara Spa at Disney's Grand Californian Hotel offers the full range of bubbling whirlpools and soothing treatments sure to give you the blissful relaxation you so richly deserve.
Though we've only skimmed the surface, it's clear that the entire Disneyland Resort is truly a wondrous water wonderland!
