Flickr photo of the day: Jedediah’s redwoods

Walking among old-growth redwoods is an experience that will humble most. It would take a heart as hard as an ax handle to not be moved by the peaceful serenity that prevails under the protective branches of the 300-foot-tall Methuselahs. (That’s not hyperbole – according to the Bible the oldest man ever lived to a ripe old age of 969 years; redwoods, if left alone, will live twice that long.)

The trees seen here, photographed by Jeremy Pettus in Jedediah Smith Redwoods State Park, near Fort Bragg, Calif., are just babies. Some of their neighbors were fully grown when the Magna Carta was written. One giant was almost 2,000 years old when loggers cut it down – for lumber – in 1969.
