Some bad, Mostly good
I spent a week in the Nueva Estancia hotel and the rooms are large and quiet. You’ll be able to sleep here. The internet is wireless and doesn’t work well in all rooms but once you get a connection, it’s fine. The staff was friendly and courteous. The restaurant has a lunch buffet that isn’t bad at all. It is fast and almost everything is very good. Many restaurants in Leon will take almost 1 hour to prepare your order so it was nice to have this place to go to. The alternative was Carlos N Charlies next door and Subway across the street.
It’s located on the main entrance to the city as you come from the south. It is a little far from the nice areas of the city (Campestre) and the mall which are farther north but close to the bus station and the shoe malls. This isn’t to say that it’s in a bad area, quite the contrary.
It will cost about $250pesos to take a taxi to the airport which is about 25 min away. The hotel used to be part of the Camino Real chain but I guess they decommissioned it. It could use a remodeling but it was clean and as I already mentioned, the rooms were big and comfortable. We negotiated a rate of about $750 per night and this might be useful information to have in hand when you make your reservation. They are located right next to the NE (Nueva Estancia) hotel which is fancier so they might be willing to negotiate depending on capacity. I would stay at this hotel again if the NE was full.
The nightlife is mostly in a plaza farther north. There are several places: Bar-ecito and Rio Latino in the same plaza and then Mint which is located farther away. The last place (Mint) is a real dive but the others are nice and there is a Tepan-yaki style place called Sushi-Ito in the same plaza. A taxi to get there is about 75pesos.
A note about the people of Leon. I found them to be much more service oriented than any place in Mexico. You can expect to be treated well in the bank, at the restaurants and at this hotel. (Mint was another story)
