Home Away From Home
We first experienced the Strutton Inn four years ago and have returned every year since. My husband had never been to a Bed & Breakfast and he was a little wary of the whole B&B experience. I spoke with Cary and Denice over the phone about my husbands concerns and they proposed what they could do to make it more comfortable for him. I was absolutely amazed that they would go to such lengths to make his first B&B experience the best it could be. They made us (my husband) feel at home and we actually extended our first visit because my husband didnt want to leave. Needless to say, my husband will not stay anywhere else.
Part of what made our first experience so wonderful was the self-guided tours laid out by Cary. It was obvious to us that Cary and Denice spent a good amount of time researching the attractions and sites of the area. Cary would ask where we wanted to go and would map out the most scenic or direct route for what we wanted to experience that day, giving recommendations on the best sites and places to eat on our route. We would have missed so much if we had ventured out without their guidance (no need for insiders guides here!).
In the four years we have been staying with the Struttons, we have seen all of the rooms and they are beautiful! The dining room is set up with several small tables, rather than one large table (as seen in a lot of B&Bs). This allows for a cozy yet comfortable dining experience where you can carry on a nice conversation, more often than not, centered on guessing the days juice blend. No worries- it is still a house secret. Note that conversation usually occurs only before and after breakfast is served. This is not a rule, but naturally happens as the breakfasts capture your full attention. Our personal favorites are the banana-pecan waffles and the biscuits and gravy.
The common room (living/entertainment room) is very comfortable (reclining sofas!!!) and is a favorite place to gather for movies or conversation on chilly nights. On warmer nights and mornings our favorite place is the large front porch to relax or wake-up with a great cup of coffee.
We have stayed in two of the rooms and of course, have a favorite! The beds are big and comfortable and the Jacuzzi tubs are wonderful! There is even a hot tub outside where you can sit and watch the deer and the incredible Black Hills sunsets.
Cary and Denice respect their guests privacy, but if youre looking for fun interaction and conversation with the hosts, they do not disappoint! After four years of visiting the Strutton Inn we feel like we are returning to family every time we pull in the drive. We have definitely been Struttonized!! We highly recommend this B&B to anyone visiting the Black Hills.
