I spent one week there in 2003. The hotel staff was very friendly and helpful, they accommodated all my strange requests, lot of good tips, a lot of advices which turned out to be very helpful for a foreigner like me. The room was very basic and there were a lot of noisy indian folks staying in the adjacent rooms, that didn't let me sleep.
But: staying in this hotel was like jumping in the middle of indian culture. I could have stayed in a 5 star hotel, but I chose not to (and not because of the price, but of the feeling).
I considered the hotel extremely safe and relatively cheap, with local folks trying their best to help you out. I got old now, so I wouldn't go back, but I recommend it for folks looking for cultural impact rather than comfort.
