Better than being at a chain hotel
We have been staying at the Monterey Hotel for 4 years, several times a year, for our days away from the city. You cannot meet a more friendly, accommodating and respectful staff. Sure, there's no elevator, but if you feel tired from climbing the stairs to your room, you can always rest on one of the beautiful seats which are placed in the hallways of every floor. You don't need a car as everything is within walking distance from the hotel..3 minutes to Fisherman's Wharf, 15 minutes along the Recreation Trail by the bay to Cannery Row and the Aquarium. The Monterey/Salinas Transit system is great and affordable. Catch the WAVE bus from Memorial Day to Labor Day for free. It will take you from across the street from the Hotel to the front door of the Aquarium. There's also a back patio where you can sit and relax after your day exploring. There's a great British pub, The Crown and Anchor, just out the back door of the Hotel. Restaurants galore all within a few minutes walk, from fast food to very fancy. If you ever need assistance with anything, either call the front desk or walk downstairs and speak to the person on the front desk. They will do their very best to make sure your stay is comfortable and pleasant. The Hotel is 100 years old and has that old world charm. The manager makes sure her staff treats each guest as if they were a guest in her own home. We have never felt as though we were anything but welcome.
